The Royal Military Academy (nl: Koninklijke Militaire School , fr: École royale militaire ) is a university of the Belgian Army in Brussels . It currently trains the entirety of the Belgian officer corps ( air and land power , navy and medical corps).

history

The Royal Military Academy was founded in 1834 along the lines of the French Ecole Polytechnique by General Jean Chapelié at the suggestion of King Leopold I donated.

organization

It is the only state university in Belgium that is not run by the communities but directly by the federal government . The Ministry of Defense is responsible for this.

Located in the buildings of the architects Henri Maquet and Henri van Dievoet , near the Jubelpark , it has around 800 students who are taught in French and Dutch. It has been headed by Major General Harry Vindevogel since 2008 .

Every year on July 21st, on the occasion of the Belgian national holiday , the students and officers of the university parade in front of the king.

Faculties

There are two faculties :

  • the Polytechnic Faculty (POL) and
  • the Faculty of Social and Military Sciences (SSMW).

courses

In 2003/04, the university switched the courses to Bachelor - Master degrees as part of the Bologna Process . The courses last five years and are fully funded by the state.

The Polytechnic Faculty trains graduate engineers. The Faculty of Social and Military Sciences awards two Masters in Social and Military Sciences : Management & Weapon Systems and Defense & Political Sciences . The university also trains officers of the medical corps, technical engineers and officers of the auxiliary corps.

In addition to the Belgian officer candidates , students from Luxembourg and North and Central Africa are also trained.
