Player career

Youth and start in the Regionalliga West until 1973

Something new began with playing football at VfR Büttgen. In 1969 he moved to VfR Neuss , where he began his career as a contract footballer in the then second -rate regional football league West . In addition to new things, the green-whites from the stadium on Hammer Landstrasse also signed Hans-Werner Moors , Heinz Mostert and Reinhold Werges for new contracts. The young footballer from Büttgen made his debut on the first round match day, August 17, 1969, in a 1-1 home draw against TSV Marl-Hüls in the regional league. He formed the right wing in the team of coach Manfred Krafft on right wing with half- forward Moors. On the fifth match day, September 14th, he played for Neuss for the first time as a defender in the away game against Viktoria Köln. At the end of the round, VfR finished 9th and Neues had played all 34 rounds and scored two goals alongside teammates like goalkeeper Klaus Schonz , Libero Josef Kokesch and attackers Robert Begerau and Ulrich Kohn . The physically present athlete - 1.82 m tall and 78 kg heavy - had mastered the entry into contract football with flying colors. In the second year things did not go well with Neuss, the team fought to stay in the league, although a prominent man in ex-national team Albert Brülls had come. Even after the coach change from Krafft to Willi Koll in October 1970 , it was still about staying up. With a 1: 3 away defeat on May 16, 1971 at runner-up Fortuna Düsseldorf in front of 17,000 spectators, Neuss finished the round in 16th place and Neues had played 33 league games (1 goal). After two years with 67 regional league appearances (3 goals), Neues signed a new contract with league competitor Fortuna Köln and moved to Cologne.

Fortuna President Hans Löring had signed the other players Rolf Bauerkämper , Rolf Kucharski (both SW Essen), Ferdinand Heidkamp (Borussia Dortmund) and Noel Campbell from Dublin and thus made it clear where Fortuna's path should lead to the Bundesliga. The athletic and uncompromising duel, Neues, immediately belonged to the regular line-up of coach Ernst-Günter Habig , and his new club also played a role in awarding the top spots. Was unfortunate that the Wuppertal SV under coach Horst Buhtz and striker Günter Pröpper lay down a sensational round: The WSV was 60: 8 points champion scored and Pröpper unique 52 goals in the West Regional. Since the team from Essen's Hafenstrasse, Rot-Weiss Essen, played a terrific round with offensive players like Willi Lippens , Günter Fürhoff and Dieter Bast and achieved the runner-up with 113 goals, Fortuna Köln remained only that with 48:20 points ungrateful 3rd place. Neues scored four goals in 32 round matches alongside other players such as Wolfgang Fahrian , Karl-Heinz Struth , Gerd Zimmermann , Helmut Bergfelder and Wolfgang Glock . President Löring relied on new impulses in the coaching field and signed Martin Luppen from the German amateur champion Jülich in 1910. The pedagogue actually led Neues and colleagues to the runner-up in 1972/73 and sat with his team in the promotion round and led Fortuna Köln in 1973 to the Bundesliga. The man from Büttgen had completed all round games as well as the eight promotion round games and scored a goal for the runner-up.

Bundesliga with Fortuna Köln and RW Essen, 1973 to 1977

Before the start of the Bundesliga, of all times, President Loering made a fatal mistake: He tackled this great challenge without a football specialist on the head coach position. He separated from the promotion coach Luppen and hired the athlete Volker Kottmann as head coach. His engagement ended on December 31, 1973 and Loering was in charge of Fortuna training until January 20, 1974, before he entrusted the former ten-fight Olympic champion Willi Holdorf with the task of keeping the Fortuna in league from January 21 . It went wrong when Fortuna Köln was relegated from the Bundesliga as 17th. Neues had played 32 Bundesliga games and scored one goal, proving that he had the quality for the Bundesliga. But he stayed with Fortuna and tried in the new 2nd Bundesliga 1974/75 to achieve the immediate return of the Bundesliga with the Cologne residents of Südstadt. But it was only enough for 5th place, where he had completed 34 second division games and scored two goals. In the summer of 1975, Cologne ended, he signed a new contract with Rot-Weiss Essen and moved to the Bundesliga.

The first season, 1975/76 , went well, under coach Ivica Horvat and with the other newcomer Horst Hrubesch , RWE took 8th place. Neues had played 31 Bundesliga games for the red and whites and delivered a convincing round alongside other RWE defensive players such as Hartmut Huhse , Gert Wieczorkowski , Gerd Wörmer and Werner Lorant . He was used by the DFB on October 8, 1975 in Duisburg in the international match of the B national team against Romania (2-0), where he played alongside Michael Sziedat , Reiner Hollmann , Paul Hahn and Bernard Dietz in the German defense. Before his second year in Essen, 1976/77, the team from Bergeborbeck had to cope with the losses of Willi Lippens, Manfred Burgsmüller and goalkeeper Jürgen Rynio . When coach Horvat was also dismissed at the end of September 1976, the ship lurched ever more threateningly towards the descent. At the end of the round the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga was certain and Neues had experienced another relegation in 25 league games. In the 1977/78 season he played 14 games for Essen in the 2nd Bundesliga until December 1977, then accepted an offer from 1. FC Kaiserslautern during the winter transfer period and thus returned to the Bundesliga.

Kaiserslautern, 1977 to 1983

From the 1978/79 season, the former RW Oberhausen defender from the legendary Oberliga times, Karl-Heinz Feldkamp , took over the coaching position from Erich Ribbeck , who moved to the DFB. One of Feldkamp's decisive tactical moves should be to retrain Hans-Peter Briegel as a stopper and to let a rustic Libero play something new. The two formed a defensive block that made every attacker shake his knees. The dynamic and self-confident Feldkamp immediately led the FCK to 3rd place and thus into the European competition. In the following round in 1979/80 , FCK repeated third place, tied on points and goals with VfB Stuttgart, but again the Palatinate moved into the UEFA Cup. With Neues and Briegel, the Feldkamp team had the most offensively strong central defense in the league. New scored 11 and Briegel seven goals in the Bundesliga. In the 1979/80 UEFA Cup , the team competed against FC Zurich, Sporting Lisbon, VTK Miskolc and in the quarter-finals against FC Bayern Munich. After the 1-0 home win on March 5, the men around Hellström, Briegel and Neues dropped out of the competition on March 19, 1980 with a 1: 4 defeat in Munich. Neues had played all eight European games and converted three penalties. In the third Feldkamp year, 1980/81, the FCK ranked 4th and Libero Neues had directed the defense in 32 league games and scored a goal. In the DFB Cup , they made it into the final on May 2, 1981 in Stuttgart against Eintracht Frankfurt. But that was lost 1: 3. The former concrete defense showed more and more cracks in 1981/82 and could no longer convince with 61 goals against. The Libero saw the red card on the second round matchday against Hamburger SV. The captain's star began to decline, also because he fell out with coach Feldkamp. The feud between the two escalated in March 1982 after Neues' disregard for the starting XI against Real in Madrid and ended with his suspension.

The last five Bundesliga games played new in the 1982/83 season when the FCK coaching experiment with Rudolf Kröner as Feldkamp's successor failed. After 131 Bundesliga appearances with 15 goals, the defender and libero, who was extraordinarily tough even by Lauterer standards, ended his activity at 1. FC Kaiserslautern and ended his playing career at Eastern AA in Hong Kong.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Neues coached VfL Neustadt and SV Edenkoben in the amateur field. From 1988 to 1989 he coached Rot-Weiss Essen in the 2nd Bundesliga . The former Bundesliga footballer had successfully completed his training as a football teacher in 1986 at the Cologne Sports University together with Jürgen Gelsdorf , Lorenz-Günther Köstner , Karl-Heinz Mrosko and Gerd Roggensack under course director Gero Bisanz .

Other coaching stations were Kickers Offenbach (December 1989 to April 1990) and Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt (July 1991 to June 1992). In September 1995 he took over the coaching position at SV Waldhof Mannheim , but was replaced in December by Klaus Schlappner , who had already coached the club during Bundesliga times. Later, Neues worked as a fan representative at 1. FC Kaiserslautern until 2003.
