Noel Campbell (born December 11, 1949 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player .

Career

Campbell played from 1966 to 1971 with the St Patrick's Athletic in the Premier Division, the League of Ireland . For the 1971/72 season he moved to Germany to Fortuna Cologne . Fortuna played in the second highest class in Germany, in the Regionalliga West . Campbell came in his debut year in the team of President Hans Loering on 28 missions and scored five goals. Fortuna took third place in the western league behind Meister Wuppertaler SV and Rot-Weiss Essen. In his second year with Fortuna, the 1972/73 season , Campbell and his teammates won the runner-up behind Rot-Weiss Essen . Campbell had scored four goals in 22 league games in Fortuna midfield. The team from Cologne's Südstadt was thus qualified for the promotion round to the Bundesliga . In the promotion round, Fortuna prevailed against FC St. Pauli , 1. FSV Mainz 05 , Karlsruher SC and Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin . By winning the group in the promotion round, Campbell played with Fortuna in the 1973/74 season in the Bundesliga. When Campell played against Borussia Mönchengladbach on the first day of the season , he was the first Irishman to play a Bundesliga game. At the end of the season, Fortuna was tied with Wuppertaler SV . But because of the worse goal difference, Campbell, the Irishman had played 29 league games, was in seventeenth place with the Cologne team. This resulted in the descent into the second class. The 2nd Bundesliga was introduced for the 1974/75 season as a double-track substructure of the Bundesliga. Campbell played in the Northern Season of that league for the next four years. The eleven-time Irish national team player played a total of 110 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scored 16 goals for Cologne.

In the 1980/81 season he played another year for the Shamrock Rovers .
