Volker Kottmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volker Kottmann (born November 7, 1937 - April 24, 2016 ) was a German football coach . In the mid-1970s he briefly coached both Bundesliga clubs from Cologne for a short time .

Before Kottmann began his career as a football coach, he was active as a track and field athlete in the early 1960s. He started first for SpVgg Feuerbach , then for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and finally for ASV Köln . Kottmann reached the finals over 400 m hurdles at German championships three times , where he was sixth twice and third once.

Kottmann's first position as head coach for the second half of the 1970/71 season was Alemannia Aachen , who had just been relegated from the Bundesliga to the Regionalliga ; he was hired in December 1970 as a temporary solution to replace the unsuccessful Georg Stollenwerk , but dismissed at the end of the season - also due to unsuccessfulness. Kottmann came to the coaching staff of 1. FC Cologne , which he coached as an interim coach for exactly one week in December 1972. However, he was hired by the president and patron of Fortuna Cologne, Jean Löring, for Fortuna. Fortuna rose to the Bundesliga for the 1973/74 season, so that Kottmann had trained both Cologne professional teams in the Bundesliga within a year. However, the Fortuna under Kottmann was so unsuccessful that he was released at the turn of the year 1973/74 during the winter break.

Kottmann's next and last position as trainer for a German professional team was FC Augsburg , then 2nd Bundesliga South , in the 1975/76 season , but here too Kottmann was dismissed during the winter break due to unsuccessfulness.

He died on April 24, 2016.
