Dieter Bast (born August 28, 1951 in Oberhausen ) is a former German soccer player who played a total of 412 Bundesliga games and scored 54 goals.

Life

Before starting his professional career, Bast learned the trade of toolmaker . In addition to his training, he played, first as a striker, in the youth of Arminia Klosterhardt and then in the A-youth of Sterkrade 06/07 , where he noticed the people in charge of Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Career

Bast made his Bundesliga debut for Rot-Weiss Essen on his 19th birthday. The Essenes had signed Bast after they noticed him at his games for Sterkrade 06/07. Borussia Mönchengladbach was also interested in the talent, but RWE managing director Paul Nikelski was able to secure Bast's commitment before Borussia could make the player an offer.

Bast quickly became a regular player and played a total of 149 Bundesliga and 64 regional league games for the Red-Whites until they were relegated in 1977. After that, in 1977, despite an offer from Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt's interest, he moved to league competitor VfL Bochum for a whopping 800,000 DM . This was the second most expensive transfer in the Bundesliga at the time, after Paul Breitner , who went to Real Madrid. He did not accept the other offers because he did not want to move out of the Ruhr area. In 1983, as VfL Bochum had financial problems, Bast was transferred to Bayer 04 Leverkusen together with Wolfgang Patzke and Ulrich Bittorf for a total transfer fee of 1.5 million DM . Since he rarely played in Leverkusen recently, he asked the club to dissolve his contract. He ended his career in the 2nd Bundesliga with Rot-Weiss Essen, because he had promised this to the board before moving to Leverkusen.

Bast played twice for the U-23 , four times in the B national team and 14 times for the Olympic team . At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Bast was the captain of the German selection, which failed in the quarter-finals of the tournament to Yugoslavia.

After the career

After the end of his career, Bast was initially a co-owner of a car dealership. Between 1991 and 1995 he was a member of the board of Rot-Weiss Essen and was responsible for the sporting area as sporting director. In this role, he engaged Jürgen Röber , initially as an assistant coach, who thus had his first coaching position. Bast is now responsible for purchasing at an electrical installation company in Essen. Today, Dieter Bast looks after the traditional Rot-Weiss Essen team, which he himself helped to establish in 1996. He is also committed to the club on a voluntary basis and was instrumental in signing the contract with the main and jersey sponsor Renault .
Dieter Bast still lives in Oberhausen. He has been married since 1972 and a father since 1974.

Remarkable

  • Although Dieter Bast played in the Bundesliga for around 15 years and was always a regular player, he was denied major successes. He never won a title and never played an A international .
  • Bast is one of six Bundesliga players to date who have scored two own goals in a game. Bast succeeded in this on February 2, 1980, when he still turned a 2-1 lead of his club in Mönchengladbach through his goals.
