Live and act

In 1470 he came to the Hochstift Mainz as canon and studied at the University of Basel from 1474 . Here he was rector in 1480, in 1482 he acquired the licentiate of rights, in 1497 he became dean of the Mainz cathedral .

After the death of Archbishop Berthold von Henneberg in 1504, he was unanimously elected Elector and Archbishop of Mainz against his will. During his reign, the Archdiocese of Mainz added some smaller territories . Like his predecessors, he is committed to the reform of the Reich and in particular to the financial security of the Reich Chamber of Commerce and the register for the Reich tax. In the chronicles the bishop is described as morally pure, selfless, well educated and sickly. He was keen to reform the monasteries and was accepted into the Bursfeld Congregation in 1506 .

Jakob von Liebenstein died on September 15, 1508 in Mainz and was buried in the cathedral . His grave monument was designed by Hans Backoffen .
