The Metnitz Mountains , named after the town of Metnitz in Carinthia, lie between the Mur and Metnitztal valleys on the border between Styria and Carinthia . The main ridge (east-west oriented) forms a watershed between Mur and Drava (the Metnitz drains over the Gurk into the Drava). Notable north-south crossings lead over floodplains to Wöbring (from Laßnitz to Metnitz), over the historically significant Priewaldsattel (old mule track , valley location Laßnitz or Ingolsthal) and over the Auerling (from Sankt Lambrecht to Ingolsthal).

The Metnitz Mountains are the northeastern part of the Gurktal Alps , geologically they are part of the Central Alps . They are an area with intensive alpine pasture and forestry and a popular skiing and hiking area. The highest peak is the Goldachnock ( 2171  m ).
