history

The upper Metnitztal was transferred by the Salzburg archbishops in the 11th century to the Gurk diocese , which established offices in Feistritz and Metnitz. In 1043 the settlement Metnitz ("Mötnitz") and the parish are mentioned, whereby the settlement at that time (later also called "Alter Markt" in a document) was probably in the area of the mouth of the Teichlbach, on today's eastern outskirts. Today's Metnitz parish church essentially goes back to a building mentioned in 1121. Today's triangular market square was laid out in the 12th or early 13th century. The place gained a certain importance as a trading center, also for the salt trade, due to its location on roads between Salzburg and Salzburg possessions in the Friesach - Althofen - Klagenfurt area. In addition, landlords and craftsmen in Metnitz benefited from the huge parish of the Metnitz parish, through which many people from the Metnitz valley and the surrounding mountains visited the place on Sundays and public holidays. Above the village there was a castle that was destroyed around 1302 when the dispute between the ministerial family of those von Metnitz and their Gurk lords escalated. A fortified tower named in 1370 "by the church" has been preserved in the core of today's rectory. In the 14th and 15th centuries weavers, tailors, shoemakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, furriers and leather workers are mentioned in the village. At the end of the 15th century the parish church was fortified because of the Turkish wars, but Metnitz was then replaced as the administrative seat of Grades , where a regional court was established. In the 16th century, the place benefited from silver mining in the upper Metnitztal. In 1585 there was a parish school and a hospital in the village of Metnitz. A castle cemetery jurisdiction was confirmed for Metnitz; At the beginning of the 17th century a pillory was erected on the market square. From the middle of the 17th century, the place was considered a market. Around 1750 the place had 66 houses, in 1757 378 people lived in the place; There were wealthy traders such as hat makers, Wagner, Lederer and Lebzelter as well as up to 9 innkeepers in town.

In 1851 Metnitz became the main town of the market town of Metnitz, which was formed from the cadastral communities Metnitz Markt and Metnitz Land . Individual houses on the southern outskirts, which are in the area of the cadastral community Feistritz and are now counted as part of the village of Metnitz, were then part of the community of Grades. In 1973 the municipalities of Grades and Metnitz were merged, so that the village today belongs entirely to the municipality of Metnitz.
