The Metnitz is a left tributary of the Gurk in the Gurktal Alps in Carinthia . The name comes from the Slavic , means "cloudy stream" and refers to the suspended matter that the Vellachbach brings in the village of Metnitz .
The Metnitz rises at an altitude of 1230 m on the Priewaldalm east of the Flattnitz (Gurktal Alps). It flows through the relatively narrow Metnitz Valley, named after it, in a west-east direction . Above Friesach the valley floor becomes very wide, from here on it is also called the Friesacher Feld . Below Friesach, the Metnitz picks up the Olsa . After a valley narrowing at Hirt, the river flows into the Gurk at intermediate waters (580 m). In its course it flows through the municipalities of Metnitz, Friesach , Micheldorf and Strasbourg .
The Metnitz has a catchment area of 470 km² and an average water flow of 5.3 m³ / s. The river is characterized by a pluvial discharge regime with a maximum in summer and a secondary maximum in autumn. Over long distances, the Metnitz can be described as natural to near-natural. The water quality corresponds to quality class I-II (not or slightly contaminated).
Only brown trout and poppy trout can be found in the upper reaches . Grayling and rainbow trout are added in the lower reaches .
