location

The village is located to the east below the village of Grades and extends along the Metznitztal state road L62.

history

The Zwatzhof (today Zwatzhof No. 1) has been owned by the Nagele family since 1730. For centuries it was one of the most valuable properties in the Metniz valley; the owner was considered the largest timber merchant in the valley.

In 1848 Kajetan Nagele was sent from the Zwatzhof as a member of the Reichstag. In the course of the reforms after the revolution of 1848/49, the houses in the area of the cadastral municipality of Grades became part of the municipality of Grades , while the houses in the area of the cadastral municipality of Metnitz Land became part of the municipality of Metnitz. The fact that in 1938 the Nagele company paid the employees at Zwatzhof extraordinary wages on the occasion of the referendum on the annexation of Austria to the German Reich and appealed to "stand united behind our great Führer" was an example worth following. It was not until the 20th century that Zwatzhof was designated as a separate village; before that, the local houses had been assigned to the neighboring villages (such as Klachl ). In 1973 the municipalities of Grades and Metnitz were merged, so that the entire village now belongs to the municipality of Metnitz.

The following population figures were counted for the village:

  • 1961: 17 houses, 157 inhabitants (of which the hamlet with 9 houses and 76 inhabitants and the hunting lodge with 2 buildings and 0 inhabitants in the area of the municipality of Grades, the scattered settlement with 6 houses and 81 inhabitants in the area of the cadastral municipality of Metnitz Land)
