The Grebenzen is an 1892  m above sea level. A. high, karstified plateau mountain in the Gurktal Alps on the border between Styria and Carinthia in Austria .

Surname

The name Grebenzen (around 1400 die alwen Grabenzen , 1468 Grebenczalm , 1494 Krawenzen ) is of Slavic origin and is derived from * krav'nica 'Kuhalm' or * greben'c '' Kamm (mountain) '.

location

The Grebenzen is located south of Sankt Lambrecht and north of the Metnitztal in Carinthia. Zeutschach is in the east . Maria Schönanger is located on the northern ridge of the Grebenzen .

The Grebenzen is separated from the neighboring groups according to the Austrian mountain group structure according to Trimmel by the following line: Metnitz east of Grades - Friesach - Olsa - Neumarkt - Urtelbach - Adendorfer Bach - Neumarkter Sattel - Thajabach - Sankt Lambrecht - Lambrechtbach - Auerlingsee - Gwerzbach - Ingolsthal - Rossbach - Metnitz east of Grades.

The Grebenzen is located in the Styrian Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park .

The highest peak of the Bergstock with 1892  m lies on the border between Styria and Carinthia and has no name in the ÖK 50 ( ). Occasionally the point Third Grebenzenhöhe is mentioned. World icon

caves

There are several karst caves around the highest point. The largest cave is the Wilde Loch , the entrance of which is at around 1800  m ( ). The Wild Hole was mentioned as early as 1673 in the history of the monastery by Father Oddo Koptiks. The first ascent of the 33 m deep cave was made on July 29, 1856, and the heads of a red deer and an elk were captured. In the meantime, 13 species have been found in bat counts. World icon

Ski Area

On the north side of the Grebenzen is the ski area also called Grebenzen. A total of 25 kilometers of slopes are accessible with a 4- seater chairlift and five tow lifts .
