Lorenz Drehmann (born April 7, 1915 in Erfurt ; † December 5, 1992 in Saarbrücken-Dudweiler ) was a German academic librarian who worked on regional studies in Saarland and Thuringia, as well as chairman of the Erfurt Home Loyalty Association in West Germany and West Berlin. In 1992 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Erfurt.

Life

Drehann was the son of a master tailor from an established Erfurt family. From 1926 to 1932 he attended the State Humanist High School in Erfurt, and from 1932 to 1934 the State High School in Heiligenstadt . He was a member of the Catholic youth association New Germany. From 1935 on, Drehann studied philosophy, theology and history in Fulda and Würzburg (state examination in 1941) and Jena (doctorate in 1947). The studies were interrupted by national labor and military service from 1939 to 1945. From 1949 to 1958 he worked as a scientific librarian at the German library in Leipzig .

In 1958, for political reasons, he moved from the GDR to West Germany, where he worked as a librarian for the civil service at Saarbrücken University Library , most recently as deputy director. His main scientific field of work was the regional history of the Saarland. Since 1965 he was a member of the Commission for Saarland State History and Folk Research, since 1970 a member of the board. From 1983 to 1992 he was the chairman of the association Heimattreue Erfurter eV As early as 1960 he had made himself available as their shop steward for the people of Erfurt in Saarland. The last time he visited his home town of Erfurt was the opening of the anniversary year 1992 (1250 year celebration).

For health reasons, Drehann was unable to take part in the award of honorary citizenship by the city of Erfurt on June 17, 1992. With this honor, the city honored his services in promoting the association "Heimattreue Erfurter" (in West Germany and West Berlin) and his efforts to make Erfurt citizens feel at home in their city again. Drehann was still working on the Erfurt Heimatbrief at the last meeting of the "Heimattreue Erfurter" association, which took place in Erfurt itself in September 1992, and with which the association disbanded. Lorenz Drehmann died on December 5, 1992 in Saarbrücken-Dudweiler.
