Hazaribagh ( Hindi : हज़ारीबाग़ , Hazārībāġ [ hʌˈzɑːriːˌbɑːɣ ]; also Hazaribag ) is the capital of the administrative district of the same name in the Indian state of Jharkhand and is 91 kilometers from Ranchi . The population is around 142,000 (2011 census).

Etymologically, the word Hazaribag consists of the two Hindi words, hazar ("thousand") and bagh ("garden") and is in this respect the "city of a thousand gardens".

During the Second World War there was a parole camp for German civilians on site . In June 1942 there were 36 women, 5 men and 16 children there. In autumn these women and children moved to one of the family camps.

The city is located in the middle of the Hazaribagh Plateau at an altitude of over 670 meters above sea level.

Hazaribag is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Hazaribag .
