Polish National Constituent Assembly (1919–1922)

The Polish National Constituent Assembly (Polish: Sejm Ustawodawczy ) was a unicameral parliament , which was partially democratically elected on January 26, 1919 for the purpose of constitution-making in the re-established Polish state .

The elections of 296 representatives took place in the formerly Russian territories, while 28 and 6 former members of the Austro-Hungarian Reichsrat and 7 of the German Reichstag were accepted for the former Galicia , Teschener Land and Posener Land . On May 2, 1920 by-elections took place in the Pomeranian Voivodeship . Men and women from the age of 21 were entitled to vote.

Parliament started its work in mid-February. The first to be passed on February 20, 1919, was the provisional constitution ( Mała Konstytucja ). a. confirmed the claim to power of Józef Piłsudski as head of state ( Naczelnik Państwa ).

The final constitution was passed on March 17, 1921; previously there were other important laws such as the above. Provisional constitution or founding statute of the Silesian Voivodeship adopted .

The constituent national assembly worked until November 28, 1922, i. H. until the bicameral parliament (with Sejm and Senate ) provided for by the March constitution had started its work.
