North Indian cyclone seasons
2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015

The cyclone season in the North Indian 2013 has no official limits as is usual in other basins, but runs all year round. The tropical cyclones usually form in this basin between April and December, with the months before and after the monsoon season , i.e. April / May and October / November, being the most active. A tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean is known as a cyclone .

The responsible Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) is the India Meteorological Department in New Delhi . This gives a name to those tropical cyclones that have at least the status of a cyclone. Low pressure areas (depending on the wind speed depressions or deep depressions ) are numbered consecutively, with the letter combination BOB indicating that the system was formed in the Bay of Bengal . The letters ARB stand for the Arabian Sea .

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Honolulu issues separate warnings and forecasts for the US facilities in the Indian Ocean. The JTWC classifies according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale , while the RSMC uses its own criteria for the classification, which are based, among other things, on the measurement of the continuous wind speed on the basis of a three-minute observation.

Storm names

Tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean are named by the RSMC of the India Meteorological Department . The names are used only once each, so no devastating storm names are removed from the list of tropical cyclone names after the season ends .

Duration May 10th - May 17th
intensity 45 kn (85 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 990 hPa

On May 4th, convection formed a few hundred kilometers west of the northern tip of Sumatra. This area first moved to the east and organized into a low pressure area on May 8th. Further organization of the system led to a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA) by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center on May 10th and a few hours later to the classification as 01B or the classification as Depression BOB 01 by the RSMC New Delhi, which was still on On the same day, he was upgraded to Deep Depression. In the morning hours of May 11th, RSMC New Delhi updated the system to a cyclonic storm and named it Mahasen . Due to only slight wind shear, Mahasen was able to strengthen itself further in the following days and on the morning of May 12th reached 1-minute wind speeds of around 95 km / h. After his peak, Mahasen was able to maintain his intensity steadily and moved north-west. On May 14th the storm made a curve and from then on moved northeast and landed on May 16, 30 km south of Feni , Bangladesh . After Mahasen moved further and further inland, the JTWC published the final warning about the storm. The IMD downgraded Mahasen to a deep depression that evening. On May 17th, the system over Nagaland disintegrated completely.

Due to the effects of the storm at least 36 people were killed: three in Indonesia , seven in Sri Lanka , 8 in Andhra Pradesh ( India ), 17 in Bangladesh and one in Thailand . In addition, a lifeboat with 100 people on board sank off the coast of Myanmar . In the accident, 42 people were rescued, 31 bodies were found on the coast of Myanmar. In Sri Lanka 3,000 people have lost their homes and are homeless. More than 160,000 people have been evacuated from the coastal strips in Myanmar inland. 15,000 to 50,000 mud huts in Bangladesh were destroyed by the storm. A total of 8.2 million people are affected by Mahasen.

On May 28, an area of low air pressure formed over the northern Bay of Bengal . The following day it was updated by the IMD on Depression. On the evening of the same day, the system went ashore via West Bengal and stayed inland on May 30th before disintegrating via Jharkhand on May 31st .

During the following days, the storm system moved in a west-northwest direction until it weakened into a pronounced low pressure area on August 23.

Duration November 8th - November 11th
intensity 30 kn (55 km / h ) (3 minutes) , 1002 hPa

At the beginning of November a low pressure area formed west of the Maldives over the Arabian Sea, which slowly drifted westward and organized itself into a depression on November 8th. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) triggered a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA) on the same day and found that the system was moving into an area that favored further development. The next morning, the IMD classified the system as a Deep Depression and the JTWC reported winds of 35 knots near the ground level circulation center, classifying the system as a tropical storm on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. After the system remained virtually motionless for almost a day, the storm crossed the Somali coast on the night of November 10th and 11th. Due to the influence of the mainland, the system quickly lost its organization and the JTWC issued its last warning, the IMD also downgraded the storm into a pronounced low pressure area and issued its last bulletin.

ARB 01 caused severe damage in the northern Somali region of Puntland , hundreds of houses and cattle were washed away by the storm surge, at least 100 people died and more are missing. The government of the defactor regime Puntland declared a disaster emergency.
