Cyclone season in the South Pacific
2010–11 , 2011–12 , 2012–2013 , 2013–14 , 2014–15

The 2012–2013 South Pacific cyclone season was the period of the year in which most of the tropical cyclones in the South Pacific formed east of longitude 160 ° east. The season officially started on November 1, 2012 and ended on April 30, 2013. However, this season includes all tropical cyclones that formed between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.

Within the South Pacific basin, tropical cyclones are monitored by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) , which operates the Fiji Meteorological Service in Nadi , Fiji and a Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) in Wellington , the Meteorological Service of New Zealand . The RSMC Nadi assigns a designation consisting of the letter F and a consecutive two-digit number to all systems that arise within the South Pacific or move into this area. The United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issues unofficial storm warnings in the South Pacific; storms are identified with the letter P and a two-digit number. The JTWC storm warnings are primarily aimed at United States military facilities. RSMC Nadi and TCWC Wellington use the Australian scale, which is based on ten-minute sustained winds, while the JTWC uses one-minute winds and the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale .

Two days after the formation, on November 20th, the RSMC reported to Nadi that the system had intensified due to the good conditions for further development into a tropical depression. The Depression moved strictly to the southeast and on November 24th left the area of responsibility of the RSMC Nadi.

On December 9, RSMC Nadi reported the formation of the fourth tropical disturbance of the season. At the time of the update, this was 150 km south-southwest of Niulakita , Tuvalu and 220 km east-northeast of Rotuma Island , Fiji . Just three hours later, she was upgraded to Tropical Depression. On December 11th at 1800 UTC, the JTWC also published the first warning about the system and reported it as Tropical Storm 04P . Six hours later after the JTWC classified the system as a tropical storm, RSMC Nadi updated it to a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian scale and named it Evan . As the day went on, Evan got better organized and formed a highly visible circulation, which led the JTWC to promote the storm to a Category 1 cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The RSMC Nadi also updated the system, upgrading Evan to a Category 2 cyclone. The cyclone continued its rapid intensification on December 13th and intensified into a severe tropical category 3 cyclone near Samoa , according to RSMC Nadi . A little later, the JTWC Evan also updated to a category 3 cyclone, albeit on the 1 minute scale used by the JTWC. Initially, the cyclone struggled to progress and remained a Category 3 cyclone until December 16, on both scales. On the morning of December 17, both RSMC Nadi and JTWC reported that Evan had intensified into a Category 4 cyclone shortly before arriving over Fiji. As the day went on, the storm began to ease south of the islands and RSMC Nadi reported that it had downgraded Evan to a Category 3 cyclone. The JTWC also reported that Evan had weakened and downgraded the cyclone to a Category 2 cyclone on December 18. The storm quickly weakened further into a weak Category 1 cyclone and was declared extra-tropical the next day. Over the next few days, the residual low of Evan moved further south and reached the area of responsibility of the TCWC Wellington on December 20th. It completely dissolved on December 25th.

At least 4 people were killed in Samoa as a result of the effects of the cyclone and 8 fishermen are still missing.

intensity 100 kn (185 km / h ) (10 minutes) , 940 hPa

On December 26, RSMC Nadi began observing a tropical disturbance located 1075 km north of Port Vila , Vanuatu . During the day, the disruption moved west and turned into a tropical depression by midnight, according to RSMC Nadi. During the day it moved southwest over the southern Solomon Islands and was updated to a tropical storm by the JTWC on December 28 as it left the islands, dubbed 05P . When the system was near the islands of Rennell and Bellona that evening , the RSMC Nadi upgraded it to tropical cyclone Freda . On December 29th, Freda continued her direction of migration to the south-west and thus moved into the Australian area of responsibility, but came back to the South Pacific after a few hours. After the cyclone was again under the responsibility of RSMC Nadi, Freda updated it to a heavy tropical cyclone of category 3 with sustained wind speeds of 150 km / h. On the night of December 30th, the cyclone intensified again and showed a well-defined eye, which is why the RSMC updated Nadi Freda to a Category 4 cyclone. The JTWC followed suit, reporting that Freda had peaked with wind speeds of 205 km / h on the 1-minute scale. After Freda was promoted to near a Category 4 cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, it began to weaken. At midnight on New Years Day, the JTWC reported the weakening into a Category 1 cyclone, while the RSMC reported to Nadi that Freda had weakened into a Category 2 cyclone. In the course of the day part of Freda's circulation dissolved completely and the RSMC Nadi downgraded the storm to a tropical depression. The following day, the JTWC issued its final warning on the system as it dragged over New Caledonia and continued to weaken. On January 4th, Freda completely disintegrated about 630 km southwest of Nadi , Fiji .

Storm names

If a tropical depression has intensified within the South Pacific to such an extent that the sustained ten-minute wind speeds are at least 65 km / h and these wind speeds surround the center at least halfway, these storms are given names. If these storms intensify between the equator and 25 ° S and between 160 ° E and 120 ° W, they are named by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center in Nadi (RSMC Nadi). If the system intensifies south of 25 ° S, the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC Wellington) in Wellington, New Zealand assigns the name in consultation with the RSMC Nadi. Systems moving from or across the South Pacific to the Australian region will retain their original name. The first cyclone to be named this season will be named Evan.
