Rotuma Iceland once Grenville called, is one the island nation Fiji owned island in the southern Pacific Ocean .
geography
The 44 km² island is of volcanic origin, hilly and densely forested. Rotuma is 570 km north of the northwest coast of Viti Levu , the main island of Fiji. With a few small islets nearby, it forms the group of the Rotuma Islands .
Rotuma Island is a double island - the much larger eastern part of the island is distinctively separated from the significantly smaller, unpopulated western Ituʻmuta peninsula by an isthmus barely 700 meters long . The now uninhabited island of Uea is three kilometers northwest of this peninsula . The island capital Ahau is located in the west of the East Island . On the isthmus itself is Motusa , the largest settlement of Rotuma with the main port of the island.
history
The first European discoverer is Captain Edward Edwards of HMS Pandora , who sighted the island on August 8, 1791 while searching for the mutineers of the Bounty and named it "Grenville's Island" in honor of the Minister of the Navy, George Grenville . There was only a brief contact with the suspicious and war-ready residents, which ended in an exchange of gifts for provisions. In 1881 Rotuma was annexed to Great Britain . As part of the independent island state of Fiji , all Rotuma Islands gained independence in 1970 .
The islands are now politically a special administrative district ( Dependency ) of Fiji (see Rotuma (Fiji) ). In 2007, there were around 2095 people on Rotuma Island.
