history

In the 16th century, the island was approached by various European seafarers and received different names such as La Solitaria , Independence , Sophia or Rocky . The first sighting is now attributed to Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra 1595.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the island was owned by the American merchant HJ Moors. The atoll was uninhabited until 1949 and was settled by settlers from the overpopulated Niutao .

The island was bought by Great Britain in 1944 .
