Tuxpan , officially Túxpam de Rodríguez Cano , is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz and lies between Tampico and Veracruz (city) . Tuxpan has about 85,000 inhabitants. The main economic factors in Tuxpan are fishing and tourism . There are places of the same name in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán . Tuxpan is the administrative seat of the Municipio Tuxpan and the seat of the Diocese of Tuxpan .

There are significant oil fields in the vicinity of Tuxpan . The city lies on the banks of the Río Tuxpan, which flows approximately 11 km downstream into the Gulf of Mexico . Since Tuxpan is the closest port to Mexico City , Tuxpan plays a huge role in handling Mexican imports and exports . Today, Tuxpan is primarily a grain port with a focus on soybeans and corn . Offshore berths are used to transfer crude oil from pipelines to oil tankers . PEMEX , the state-owned Mexican oil company, operates a plant for the construction and maintenance of oil platforms that are used in the Gulf of Mexico.

The port of Tuxpan is also able to handle super tankers . Because of the increasing trade ship traffic in Veracruz , the headquarters of the golf fleet of the Mexican Navy was relocated to Tuxpan. Several warships are stationed there, including three Knox-class frigates called Allende , Abasolo and Victoria , which were built in the USA in the 1960s and sold to Mexico after they were decommissioned by the US Navy .

In 1956, Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl Castro crossed over with Che Guevara on their famous journey with the motor yacht Granma from the port of Tuxpan to Cuba to start the Cuban revolution .

In the south of the city there is a 495 MW power plant owned by the independent power plant operator Electricidad Aguila de Tuxpan S. de RL de CV (FET) and supplying electricity to the Mexican state company Comisión Federal de Electricidad .
