The Śląski Stadium ( German Silesian Stadium , English Silesian Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the southern Polish city of Chorzów ( German Königshütte ), Silesian Voivodeship . The facility in Schlesisches Park meets the requirements of UEFA stadium category 4 . It is used for international matches for the Polish national football team . Up until the 2000s, football clubs from the Silesian Voivodeship also played European cups . There is no permanent home club that regularly plays in the stadium. In addition to football, athletics events are held. Concerts are also held in the Śląski Stadium. It is nicknamed Kocioł Czarownic ( German witch's cauldron ).
history
The plan for a stadium for the Upper Silesia metropolitan area was made before the Second World War . The plans based on the Berlin Olympic Stadium were discarded after the war. The architect Julian Stefan Brzuchowski designed the facility in the early 1950s. Work began in 1951. When it opened in 1956, the Śląski Stadium officially held 87,000 spectators. In the years that followed, around 100,000 people often came to the stadium for games. At the end of the 1950s the floodlights were ready for use. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the derbies in Upper Silesia were held in the Śląski Stadium. On September 18, 1963, the record setting for a football game was set when 120,000 spectators watched Górnik Zabrze's game against the Austrian club Austria Wien in the context of the 1963/64 European Cup , which Górnik won 1-0. In 1967 the Polish Athletics Championships took place across the board. The shot putter Nadezhda Tschischowa from the USSR was the first woman to hit the 20-meter mark at an athletics event in the stadium on July 13, 1969 and set a new world record of 20.09 meters . On July 6, 1971, the then Katowice Voivodeship decided to replace the athletics facility with a speedway track . The 384 meter long and 9.5 meter wide slag track was officially approved on May 5, 1973 by the committee of the Polish Automobile Association and was one of the most modern systems in the world. It found here u. a. several world championships took place in speedway. In 1993, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) declared the sports facility the national stadium and home ground for the national football team. For this purpose, the Śląski Stadium was converted into a seating stadium from 1994 to 1997. In 2001 a new grandstand in the east with an attached hotel was completed and the stands were equipped with plastic seats. The available space fell to 47,202. Until the start of modernization work in 2009, Poland's selection in Chorzów had international matches. In 2010 the city officially applied for the 2015 World Athletics Championships with the converted Śląski Stadium, alongside Beijing and London . Due to the delays in the renovation, they withdrew and the Chinese capital was awarded the contract.
modification
In 2008, the design by gmp Architekten in cooperation with the structural planners from Schlaich Bergermann Partner (sbp) won the design competition. In 2009, the modernization of the facility began with a view to the European Football Championship 2012 in Poland and Ukraine . The plans saw u. a. a complete roofing of the tiers by means of a construction supported by suspension ropes over 40 reinforced concrete columns with a translucent polycarbonate roof. The capacity should increase to around 55,000 visitors. The work should be completed by summer 2011. However, work was delayed and the Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw , which was completed in 2008, was declared the national stadium instead of the Śląski Stadium. Since there was not enough time until the EM 2012, the stadium was to serve as the training facility for the tournament. In July 2011 there was an accident while pulling up the cable network structure of the ring cable roof. Components broke, so work was suspended. In 2013, the government of the Silesian Voivodeship, as the owner, launched a new tender for the construction and completion of the roof. The Pfeifer Group took over the unfinished roof. The construction had to be inspected and accepted. Due to a revised planning, new parts had to be delivered. After a revision of the rope construction that had been lying on the ground for years, the conclusion was reached to replace the knot of the rope net with a new construction. Only a few of the ropes were sorted out after a test. At the end of 2015 the rope net could be lifted and bolted in one go without any problems. The stadium construction was completed in September 2017. The costs rose from the original PLN 360 million (around € 80 million ) to over PLN 650 million (around € 145 million). The roof measures axially 335 meters in length and 275 meters in width. The building rises 49 meters with the load-bearing roof structure.
After the renovation, the stadium will have 54,378 seats. B. can be used in football. At concerts, the capacity increases to around 85,000 visitors with standing room inside. The UEFA category 4 arena also has an athletics facility with nine class 1 lanes of the World Athletics Association . In addition to the 1,777 business seats are 384 seats in the 25 VIP - boxes . There are also 106 wheelchair-accessible spaces and up to 842 spaces for media and press representatives . The roof covers an area of 43,000 m² . The natural green playing field extends over 7,500 m².
The sports arena has been the destination of the Silesia Marathon since 2017. The first soccer match in the converted stadium was played by the Polish national soccer team against the national team of South Korea on March 27, 2018 . The home side won 3-2. On August 22, 2018, the athletics meeting Memoriał Kamili Skolimowskiej , in memory of the late hammer throw Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska (1982-2009), was held in Chorzów for the first time . 41,200 spectators came to the event. Since then it has been held annually in the Śląski Stadium.
International matches of the Polish national football team
With the first international match against the GDR on July 22, 1956, the Polish national soccer team opened the new stadium. The Polish team competed in Chorzów more than 50 times. The matches highlighted in green are only international games officially recognized by the Polish Association, including a qualifier for the 1960 Summer Olympics .
