The European Open Water Championships took place from September 9-14, 2008 in Dubrovnik . Individual competitions for women and men were held over distances of 5, 10 and 25 kilometers. There was also a team mixed competition over 5 kilometers for the first time.

The European Open Water Championships 2008 were strongly influenced by the Italian participants, who won three of the seven competitions. In the women's category , Rachele Bruni won over 5 kilometers, Larissa Iltschenko over 10 kilometers, and Margarita Domínguez over 25 kilometers. In the men’s race, Spyridon Gianniotis secured the title over 5 kilometers, Thomas Lurz won over 10 kilometers and Valerio Cleri over 25 kilometers. In the team competition over 5 kilometers, Italy had the lead with Andrea Volpini , Rachele Bruni and Luca Ferretti .
