The Water Polo European Championship is one of the Ligue Européenne de Natation currently being transmitted (LEN) biennial pan-European tournament in water polo . The official name is European Water Polo Championship . The tournament was first held for men in 1926 and for women in 1985 . The 1st Women's European Championship was held in a separate tournament in Oslo in 1985, apart from the European Swimming Championship.
The European water polo championship was part of the European swimming championships up to and including 1997 and from 1999 received its own, independent framework. The men's and women's title fights have been held together in one place since 1987, with all games taking place in a common arena since 2010.
