Postage stamp with water polo motif on the occasion of the 10th European Swimming Championships in 1962
The 10th Men's Water Polo European Championship took place in Leipzig from August 19 to 25, 1962 . All games were played in the swimming stadium of the Sportforum . A total of eleven teams played for the title, the winners of the tournament were the water polo players from Hungary , who celebrated their eighth championship. Behind Hungary there were two silver places tied with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia , so that no bronze medal was awarded. The last two final round games also marked the end of the 10th European Swimming Championships , in which the competition took place.
Originally twelve teams were supposed to start in the tournament, but the German DSV boycotted the European Swimming Championships due to the construction of the wall . So it was already clear before the start of the competitions that the only two starters in group B drawn, the GDR and Italy , would automatically move into the intermediate round.
