Conny Van Bentum (1983)

Cornelia "Conny" van Bentum (born August 12, 1965 in Barneveld ) is a former Dutch swimmer . From 1980 to 1988 she won a medal with the freestyle relay at three Olympic Games.

Athletic career

From the beginning until 1983

Conny van Bentum won her first Dutch championship title back in 1979. At the 1980 Olympic Games , fourteen-year-old Conny van Bentum swam over 100 meters freestyle to fifth place, but at the finish she was two seconds behind bronze medalist Ines Diers from the GDR. Six days later, the GDR's 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay with the three medal winners from the individual competition had a lead of over six seconds over the second-placed Swedes. Half a second behind the Swedes, the Dutch relay with Conny van Bentum, Wilma van Velsen , Reggie de Jong and Annelies Maas took third place and received the bronze medal.

The following year Conny van Bentum won three medals at the 1981 European Swimming Championships in Split. First she won bronze in the 100 meters freestyle behind Caren Metschuk and Birgit Meineke from the GDR. Then the Dutch 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay with the line-up of Annemarie Verstappen , Monique Drost , Wilma van Velsen and Conny van Bentum swam bronze behind the two German relays. This was followed by fourth place with the tier relay made up of Jolanda de Rover , Petra van Staveren , Annemarie Verstappen and Conny van Bentum. In the end, Van Bentum won bronze in the 200 meter freestyle behind the GDR swimmers Carmela Schmidt and Birgit Meineke.

At the 1982 World Swimming Championships in Guayaquil, the 100-meter freestyle relay with Verstappen, Maas, van Velsen and van Bentum won bronze behind the relay teams from the GDR and the United States. The Dutch layer relay, which started with the same line-up as in 1981, took fourth place.

With seven finals and six medals, the 1983 European Swimming Championships in Rome were particularly successful for Conny van Bentum. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Jolande van der Meer , Reggie de Jong and Conny van Bentum received bronze behind the two German relays. In the 200 meter freestyle she won bronze behind Birgit Meineke and Astrid Strauss from the GDR. Birgit Meineke also won over 100 meters freestyle, behind Kristin Otto Conny van Bentum won bronze. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Wilma van Velsen, Elles Voskes and Conny van Bentum won silver behind the relay from the GDR. Van Bentum took fifth place over 100 meters butterfly. Then the layer relay with Jolanda de Rover, Petra van Staveren, Annemarie Verstappen and Conny van Bentum won silver behind the relay from the GDR. In the end, van Bentum won bronze over the 200 meter butterfly behind Cornelia Polit and Ines Geißler from the GDR. For her six medals, Conny van Bentum was named Sportswoman of the Year in the Netherlands in 1983.

From 1984 until the end of his career

After the swimmers from the GDR did not take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the Olympic boycott , the host country's team won almost all of the gold medals among the swimmers, only the Canadian Anne Ottenbrite and Jolanda de Rover and Petra van Staveren from the Dutch team could each win a gold medal. Conny van Bentum finished fourth over 100 meters freestyle and fifth over 200 meters freestyle. The Dutch freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Elles Voskes, Desi Reijers and Conny Van Bentum came in second behind the Americans. In the 100 meter butterfly, van Bentum finished seventh, over the 200 meter butterfly she finished eighth. The Dutch layer relay with the Olympic champions de Rover and van Staveren as well as Verstappen and Reijers was disqualified in the preliminary run, so that van Bentum was not used.

At the 1985 European Swimming Championships , Conny van Bentum won bronze in the 100 meters freestyle behind Heike Friedrich and Manuela Stellmach from the GDR. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Conny van Bentum, Mildred Muis , Ilse Oegema and Jolande van der Meer won silver behind the GDR relay. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Conny van Bentum, Ilse Oegema, Karin Brienesse and Annemarie Verstappen as the final swimmer won bronze behind the two German relays. Van Bentum took fifth place over the 100 meter butterfly, and seventh on the twice as long course. At the Universiade 1985 Conny van Bentum won gold in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters freestyle.

With seven finals and four medals, Conny van Bentum was also quite successful at the World Championships in Madrid. In the 100 meter freestyle she won bronze behind Kristin Otto from the GDR and Jenna Johnson from the United States. The 200-meter freestyle relay with Annemarie Verstappen, Jolande van der Meer, Marianne Muis and Conny van Bentum won bronze behind the relays from the GDR and the USA. In the 200 meter freestyle, van Bentum reached fourth place, twelve hundredths of a second behind the bronze medal. With Conny van Bentum, Laura Leideritz , Karin Brienesse and Annemarie Verstappen, the 100-meter freestyle relay won bronze behind the GDR and the USA. This was followed by sixth place over 100 meters butterfly. Also in the layer relay, the relay from the GDR won ahead of the USA and the Dutch women, for which Jolanda de Rover, Petra van Staveren, Conny van Bentum and Annemarie Verstappen competed. At the end of the race, van Bentum took sixth place in the 50 meter freestyle.

At the end of her career, Conny van Bentum competed in five disciplines at the 1988 Olympic Games and reached the final of each. At the start, she was eighth in the 100 meter freestyle. The 100-meter freestyle relay with Marianne Muis, Mildred Muis, Conny van Bentum and Karin Brienesse won silver behind the relay from the GDR. In the 100 meter butterfly, van Bentum crossed the finish line in sixth place. The tier relay with Jolanda de Rover, Linda Moes , Conny van Bentum and Karin Brienesse took fifth place. And finally van Bentum finished eighth in the 200 meter butterfly.

After her career, Conny van Bentum was the medical supervisor of the women's national hockey team for a short time . Then she settled as a doctor in Amersfoort.
