Ryan Fitzgerald Murphy (born July 2, 1995 in Palos Heights , Illinois ) is an American swimmer . In the 2016 Olympics , he won three gold medals (in the disciplines 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and the 4-x-100-m layers relay team). In the 4 x 100 m individual medley relay, he set the world record in the 100 m back discipline that is still valid today .

Career

Murphy took part in the 2011 Youth Swimming World Championships in Lima and won the bronze medal in the 200 m back discipline. He also won bronze at the Pan American Games in 2011 over the same route .

At the short course world championships in 2012 , he won the bronze medal again in the same discipline. By participating in the heats, he also won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 m individual relay relay.

In 2015, Murphy first took part in the World Swimming Championships . While he finished fifth in the backstroke over 200 m, he won two medals in 4 x 100 m medley relay competitions: gold in the men and silver in the mixed competition.

At the 2016 Olympic Games , Murphy competed in three disciplines: 100 m back, 200 m back and 4 x 100 m individual medley relay. He was Olympic champion in all three disciplines . In his victory over 100 m back on August 9, 2016, he set an Olympic record with 51.97 s . In the relay competition, Murphy did not take part in the preliminary run. In the final on August 14, he set a new world record over 100 m back with 51.85 s . The season itself (Murphy, Cody Miller , Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian ) set an Olympic record.

At the 2017 Swimming World Championships , Murphy was able to defend his title in the 4 x 100 m medley in the relay. He also won a gold medal with the 4 x 100 m medley relay in mixed. In the backstroke he won silver over 200 m and bronze over 100 m. At the 2018 Short Course World Championships , Murphy won three gold and three silver medals.

At the 2019 World Swimming Championships , Murphy won three silver medals: over 200m back behind Yevgeny Rylow and in both 4 x 100m individual medley competitions.
