The men's 200 meter back competition at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio de Janeiro was held on August 10th and 11th, 2016 in the London Aquatics Center . 26 athletes from 19 countries took part.

There were four preliminary runs. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals that were held on the same day. Here too, the finalists qualified by setting the eight fastest times in both semi-finals.
