The men's 200 meter butterfly competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held on August 8th and 9th, 2016 in the Estádio Aquático Olímpico . 29 athletes from 21 countries took part.

There were four preliminary runs. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals that were held on the same day. Here too, the finalists qualified by setting the eight fastest times in both semi-finals.
