The 128th German Swimming Championships took place from May 5th to 8th, 2016 for the 13th time in a row in the swimming and diving hall in the European Sports Park Berlin and were organized by the German Swimming Association . Titles were awarded in 42 competitions, with Annika Bruhn being the most successful athlete of this championship with three titles (2 in singles and 1 in relay).
Olympic qualification
The competition also served as the first step towards qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . In the heats and finals, the athletes had to undercut the standard times specified by the German Swimming Association in order to secure a place on the so-called "longlist". Athletes who undercut this first qualification standard had to prove weakened standard times again in later competitions ("Mare-Nostrum Tour" or "German Open"). Up to two athletes per gender and per route could then qualify for the German Olympic team .
Attendees
The 100 fastest swimmers and relays in Germany (open class) of the current season (September 1, 2015 up to and including April 17, 2016) were eligible for each route. In addition, there was a separate rating for the EYOF years (female: born 2001/2002 and male: born 2000/2001), in which the 20 fastest young athletes of each gender were allowed to take part.
780 swimmers from 196 clubs were registered for 2204 individual starts and 203 relays. With 30 active players and 83 individual and 8 relay starts, SG Stadtwerke München was the largest team in terms of numbers. In addition to the members of the German clubs, athletes with German citizenship were also allowed to start, so that 5 athletes each started for a foreign club ( University of Bath ( United Kingdom ), Hullam 91 UVE ( Hungary ), NIMO Landgraaf ( Netherlands ), Ohio State University ( USA ) and another unnamed club from the USA).
Records
The sporting highlights of the championships were the German records of Alexandra Wenk over 100 meters butterfly (in the preliminary and final) as well as 200 meters medley (in the preliminary and final) and Damian Wierling over 50 meters freestyle.
Over 50 m butterfly, Dorothea Brandt (1st place), Alina Schmidtke (2nd place) and Alexandra Wenk (3rd place) remained below the old German record.
Furthermore, the women from SSG Saar Max Ritter set a German record for club relays over the 4 × 200 meter freestyle.
The only 16-year-old Johannes Hintze was able to undercut the required Olympic standards for the 400 meter medley. He set his 47th German age group record.
The women's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay from the Berlin TSC swam approx. 2 seconds faster than the existing world record in the master class C (age group 120-159). However, since it was not a Masters competition, this record is not officially recognized.
Florian Wellbrock swam as the third German swimmer ever over 1500 meters freestyle under 15 minutes. Just 5 seconds separated him from the German record from 1991 by Jörg Hoffmann .
Martina van Berkel swam a new Swiss record in the 400 m individual medley. Felix Auböck swam a new national record for Austria.
German age class records for young people have been improved 12 times: Johannes Hintze over 200 meters freestyle and 400 m medley (in the preliminary and final), Laura Riedemann over 100 meters back, Florian Wellbrock over 800 and 1500 meters freestyle, Luca Nik Armbruster 50 meters butterfly ( in the preliminary and final), Laura Riedemann 50 meters back, Henning Mühlleitner over 400 meters freestyle, Julia Mrozinski over 400 meters medley and Ramon Klenz over 400 meter medley.
