The swimming and diving hall in the Europa Sportpark ( SSE ) is an indoor swimming pool in Berlin and the venue for many national and international competitions. It is located on Landsberger Allee in the Prenzlauer Berg district in the Pankow district in the immediate vicinity of the Velodrom . From the Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station there is an underpass to the building. The hall has a regular capacity of 2,500 spectators, with additional stands for up to 4,000 people. With a water surface of 3391 m² it is the largest swimming pool in Europe.

history

The swimming and diving hall was designed together with the Velodrom in 1992 by the French architect Dominique Perrault on the occasion of Berlin's application for the 2000 Olympic Games . Construction began in June 1993, three months before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in favor of Sydney . The former Landsberger Allee freight yard and the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle were demolished for the construction . In 1999 the two-part swimming and diving hall was opened.

The velodrome and the swimming and diving hall are next to each other and are almost completely sunk into a heaped landscape plinth, so that there are no faces or facades. The roof plate constructions, clad with wooden panels, protrude as flat panes one meter from the park-like plateau planted with apple trees. Outside stairs lead down through this area to the entrances.

At the end of 2003, the hall was expanded to include a sludge water treatment plant, with which its operator, the Berlin baths companies , could combine environmental protection and cost savings. According to the operator, more than 550,000 visitors (as of 2006) use the swimming pool every year.

The swimming and diving hall is part of the federal water diving base and the two state performance centers for swimming and diving .

Furnishing

Innovations that are considered exemplary internationally were introduced into the construction of the swimming and diving hall. The equipment includes:

  • a competition pool with a mobile turning bridge (50 × 25 × 3 m)
  • a swimming pool (50 × 25 x 2.1m) with variable water depth (0.3 - 2.1m)
  • a diving pool (21 × 25 × 5 m)
  • a double diving tower with single platforms at 3 m and 7.5 m and double platforms for synchronized jumping at 5 m and 10 m, 3 x 3 m boards, 4 x 1 m boards, a height-adjustable board (1 m - 5 m)
  • a teaching pool (16 × 6 m)
  • a therapy pool with variable water depth (9 × 5 m)
  • two paddling pools / children's and toddler pools (5 × 5 m)
  • a warm-up pool / hot tub (1.50 × 2 m)

Further equipment is a dry jumping facility, a gym, a weight room, a sales room for sporting goods and a bistro .

Events

Since its opening, the swimming and diving hall has hosted many national and international swimming competitions, such as the ISM (International Swim Meetings) or the FINA Swimming World Cup . The 2002 European Swimming Championships took place there from July 25th to August 4th, 2002 . In 2000 it was and has been the venue for the German Swimming Championships since 2004 . The German year swimming championships also take place regularly in this swimming pool. The facility is primarily used by swimmers and jumpers, but in 2007 the men's world league final in water polo also took place here. From August 13th to 24th, 2014, the SSE was the venue for diving and synchronized swimmers at the 2014 European Swimming Championships .

On November 26, 2005, the TV total high diving initiated by Stefan Raab took place in the SSE . After a break of several years, the FINA Swimming World Cup will take place again in the SSE in summer 2016 .
