A paddling pool is colloquially a water basin, the walls of which are usually made of inflatable plastic tubes. In contrast to a swimming pool or garden pool or prefabricated pool, a paddling pool is not firmly anchored, is usually much smaller and has no water filtering (the water is freshly filled in before use).

Paddling pools and jumbo pools

Paddling pools for children usually have a diameter of 90 cm or more. However, there are no upper limits - there are also inflatable plastic garden pools with a diameter of two meters and more in specialist shops and in horticultural centers . Paddling pools for children usually consist of two air chambers and have a relatively low rim. So-called jumbo pools are also available in rectangular versions and are around 1.50 meters deep; so they are also suitable for adults. Accessories include entry ladders and sun canopies that protect against UV radiation .

Paddling pool safety

When purchasing paddling pools and inflatable garden pools, attention must be paid to the thickness of the liner and the density of the valves . The thicker the material, the more stable the paddling pools are. The valves should close well so that no air can escape. Paddling pools for children are safer when they have an inflatable floor - falls are cushioned and injuries are prevented. Larger garden pools are often anchored to the ground with metal rods for greater stability. You should also pay attention to the TÜV and GS seals when buying.

Paddling pools and garden pools are usually made of PVC film. This plastic is very stable - to make it malleable, however, various plasticizers and other additives are used (see Foil Pond # Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) ). The non-chemically bound plasticizers, which can make up "up to 50% of the total mass", can be removed from a film, which also causes the embrittlement of PVC pond films after about 10 years. Some plasticizers that migrate out of the film , especially phthalate plasticizers such as DEHP and DBP , are considered to be hazardous to health. The EU Parliament banned DEHP and DBD for children's toys back in 2005. When buying children's paddling pools (from the Far East ), you should therefore pay attention to which plasticizers are used.
