The 95th German Swimming Championships were held from 21 to 25 June 1983 Stadionbad of Hanover instead. The title fights also served as a qualifying competition for the 1983 European Championships in Rome . For the first time, the champions were determined on the 50 meter freestyle sprint course. The 19-year-old Michael Groß provided the sporting highlights of these championships with the world record over 200 meters freestyle and a European record over 200 meters butterfly.
