The SG EWR Rheinhessen-Mainz is an amalgamation of the swimming departments of six sports clubs from Mainz and the Rheinhessen area. Since 1999 , Mainz has been the state center for swimming in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The men's team of the SG has been swimming in the 1st Bundesliga since the 2006/07 season , the women's team starts in the 2nd Bundesliga South. In 2006 the SG was awarded the "Green Ribbon for exemplary promotion of talent in the club" by the German Olympic Sports Confederation .

Club history

The association, initially founded in December 1995 as an informal training and starting community, was anchored in a newly founded association in 2000 , in which the swimming departments of the following clubs are combined:

  • Gymnastics Club 1846 Oppenheim eV
  • Gymnastics Club 1893 Nieder-Olm eV
  • DLRG Nieder-Olm / Wörrstadt eV
  • SSV Bingen eV
  • Swimming community Rheinhessen Mainz eV

Since May 2002 the SG has had the name of its main sponsor, EWR AG , in the club's name.

Elite sport

Known swimmers

The SG EWR Rheinhessen Mainz is particularly known for open water swimming . In the long-distance training group led by the former world-class swimmer Nikolai Evseev - until December 2008 - the world champion and Olympian Angela Maurer , the multiple World Cup medalist Christian Hein and the European Championship participant Johanna Manz train . Alexander Studzinski , who finished fourth in the World Championships for Wiesbaden , trains in this group . Angela Maurer switched to SSV Undine 08 eV Mainz in January 2009 . Lothar Schubert has been SG's head coach since January 2009.

The top swimmers mainly train in the air dome of the outdoor pool in Mainz-Mombach in winter and primarily in the Taubertsbergbad near Mainz main station in summer . One to two training units (plus dry training) are offered for the first team athletes.

In addition, the SG EWR offers its swimmers further training opportunities in Rheinhessen:

  • in the indoor pool "Opptimare" in Oppenheim,
  • in the Rheinhessenbad in Nieder-Olm and
  • in the Rheinwelle in Gau-Algesheim.

Promotion of young talent and talent

Construction work

In addition to working in top-class sport, the promotion of young talent is particularly important. In recognition of the development work, the SG EWR Rheinhessen Mainz was appointed as the junior base of the German Swimming Association DSV for the Rhine-Main region in 2014.
