Paul Spies (* 1960 ) is a Dutch art historian and has been the museum director of the Stadtmuseum Berlin Foundation since 2016 .

Life

Spies grew up in Amsterdam and graduated in 1986 from the university there with honors in art history and classical archeology .

In 1987 he founded D'ARTS, a company specializing in consulting and project management in the field of art history, in which he worked for more than 20 years. D'ARTS has produced numerous exhibitions, books, publications, television programs and marketing campaigns.

Since January 1, 2009, Spies has been the director of the Amsterdam Museum Foundation , which includes the City of Amsterdam Collection, three museums, two historic canal houses and a permanent exhibition. By implementing new concepts, he managed to significantly increase the number of visitors and doubled the income (including fundraising ) of the Amsterdam Museum Foundation . Furthermore, Paul Spies set up the so-called “Amsterdam Heritage Museums” network in Amsterdam. Since 2014 Paul Spies has been a manager of the "Amsterdamse Culturele Instellingenoverleg" (ACI), the official representation of all cultural institutions in Amsterdam, and thus acts as a representative of the Amsterdam cultural sector towards the city administration and other stakeholders.

On February 1, 2016, he was appointed by the Berlin Senate to succeed Franziska Nentwig as the new director of the Stadtmuseum Berlin Foundation for five years . He also acts as chief curator of the State of Berlin in the Humboldt Forum . In his first working week, Spies announced that he would present a “master plan for the future conception of the Stadtmuseum Berlin Foundation and the Humboldt Forum” in July 2016.

He has already indicated the first thoughts of this new concept to the media, such as the implementation of a new word-image brand . On July 18, 2016, he presented his “master plan” for the Berlin area in the Humboldt Forum under the title “Berlin and the World” and the “Future Strategy for the City Museum Berlin” in the Märkisches Museum . In 2017, Paul Spies further concretized the plans that the Stadtmuseum Berlin should have a more impact on the urban space - try out and establish participation as an integral part of museum practice. Spies relies on flexible project management. For him, the key lies in the abolition of hierarchies.
