Sarah Kohler (* 20th June 1994 in Hanau ) is a German swimmer on long-haul routes. In 2017 she became European champion over 800 meters on the short course and in 2019 vice world champion over 1500 meters on the long course.

career

Sarah Köhler starts for SG Frankfurt . She trained under Michael Spikermann at the Rhein-Neckar Olympic Training Center in Heidelberg . In spring 2014 she successfully passed her Abitur at the Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg, an elite school for sports , and is now studying law at the University of Heidelberg . Since September 2018 she has been training under Bernd Berkhahn at the federal base in Magdeburg .

Köhler was German champion in the 800 and 1500 meters freestyle in 2014 . She celebrated her greatest international successes to date in 2017 by winning the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen over 800 m freestyle and the Vice European Championship over 400 m freestyle, and in 2013 with two 3rd places over 800 m freestyle at the FINA World Cup in Moscow and Dubai. At the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona she finished 23rd with 4: 16.13 min in the prelim over 400 m freestyle, 15th over 800 m with 8: 34.72 min, and 15th over 1500 m with 16: 24.42 min Preliminary run 14th. At the short course world championships in 2014 she reached fifth place in the 800 m freestyle. In 2016 she took part in the Olympic Games in Rio and was the only German woman to make it to a final, where she finished 8th in the 800 m freestyle.

At the European Championships in 2018 , Köhler won silver in the 1500 m freestyle and with the 4 × 1.25 km open water relay, as well as bronze with the German 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju , she won gold with the open water relay and silver in the 1500 m freestyle in a German record time of 15: 48.83 minutes. She took fourth place over 800 m, with a time of 8: 16.43 minutes, beating Anke Möhring's 32-year-old German record by more than three seconds. In August 2019 she won the 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle titles at the German Championships . On November 16, 2019, Köhler set a new world record over 1500 m freestyle at the German Short Course Championships in 15: 18.01 minutes, which the Spaniard Mireia Belmonte had held for almost five years .
