Michael Hain

Michael Hain is a brigadier general ( out of service ) of the Air Force of the Armed Forces . In his last employment until February 1, 2019, he was General Manager of the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Program Management Organization .

Military career

Training and first uses

Hain joined the Air Force in 1981. After training as a navigator at the USAF and basic training as a weapons system officer on the F-4E Phantom II , he served from 1984 to 1995 with Fighter Bomber Wing 36 "Westphalia" in Rheine - Hopsten . He was also used as an operations officer at the squadron , group and squadron level. In his last assignment there he was the squadron chief of the F-4F training squadron.

Service as a staff officer

From 1995 to 1997 Hain completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . This was followed by a two-year assignment as a department head in the air transport command of the Air Force in Münster . From 1999 to 2001 Hain served in the Air Force Command in Cologne - Wahn . Here he was responsible for further development in the field of air-to-ground attack, aerial reconnaissance and target acquisition . Further tasks were the evaluation of the Balkan Air Operations ( Deny Flight , Deliberate Force and Allied Force ), as well as cooperation in the reorganization of the Air Force. In 2001 he was assigned to the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn, where he was responsible for harmonizing the ISR requirements of the armed forces and developing a cross-armed doctrine as well as improving international cooperation in the field of reconnaissance. This was followed from 2004 to 2006 by the Alliance Ground Surveillance Support Staff (AGS3) of NATO . Here, Hain was responsible for the operational principles and technical aspects of AGS. With the decision to set up an AGS implementation office at SHAPE , Hain became the first department head. This was again followed by a position as head of department in the Federal Ministry of Defense (Department V5 Equipment Department) where he was responsible for the procurement and management of all surface-to-air defense systems and airborne weapon systems. This included large multinational systems such as Eurofighter , Airbus A400M , MEADS , NH 90 , UAVs and satellites. In addition, this department was responsible for the management of NATO programs such as AGS, NATO Missile Defense and NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control .

Service as a general

In April 2013, Hain was appointed Brigadier General Manager of the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Program Management Organization in Brunssum , The Netherlands . On February 1, 2019, he handed over this post to Brigadier General Michael Gschoßmann and retired.
