The Sonthofen ice rink is an ice rink in Sonthofen , Bavaria . It is the home venue of the ERC Sonthofen and is opened several times a week for school and mass sports in winter.

history

After ice sports had been practiced as a hobby by young people on two ponds in Sonthofen since the 1920s, the then market town opened the open-air swimming pool in the winter months in the early 1930s to allow ice sports there. An area of 95 m × 45 m was prepared for an ice rink and represents the beginning of ice hockey in Sonthofen.

During the Second World War , an ice rink was first built on the Marktanger in Sonthofen, which was mainly used by curlingers . After the end of the Second World War, the then largest sports club in Sonthofen, TSV Sonthofen, added an ice hockey department and the Marktanger was converted into a natural ice stadium in winter in the following years. This was the basis for giving the Sonthofen youth a place to stay in winter and led to an enthusiasm for ice sports in the city.

The successes at that time and the ongoing enthusiasm in the city led to the decision in 1958 to found an independent ice hockey club and to give it a new home with an artificial ice stadium on Hindelanger Strasse . On May 2, 1958, an extraordinary general assembly of the ice sports department of TSV Sonthofen took place as the founding assembly of the ice and roller hockey club Sonthofen eV. ERC Sonthofen eV was founded unanimously and on June 19, 1958, it was entered in the register of associations.

During the winter of 1958/59, when the natural ice stadium on the Marktanger was still in operation, the new artificial ice stadium was built. With the help of the members, the armed forces, construction workers and THW experts , as well as donations and public funds, the then uncovered artificial ice stadium was opened on November 14, 1959.

In 1973 the stadium was taken over by the city of Sonthofen , which is still the owner and operator of the ice rink today.

In 1982 the city of Sonthofen decided to roof the ice rink in order to make it more attractive for spectators and to make games independent of the weather. In their own work, members and sponsors of the ERC Sonthofen then built the two stands behind the gate as well as the main stand in front of the roof, which was also largely built by members. The stadium is still open on three sides, only the opposite stand on which the club house, the home team's cabin, three kiosks, the teams' benches and the stadium restaurant are located is closed. At the opening, the ice rink held almost 3200 spectators. The attendance record is around 4,000 spectators in the 1980s and 1990s, with regular games against clubs from the area, e.g. B. the Augsburg EV or the EV Füssen that stadium was bursting at the seams.

Current

The ice rink is currently still being used by ERC Sonthofen as its home ground, which is currently located in the district league . In addition to the men's team, the women's team and all youth departments from running schools to juniors also play in the ice rink. The stadium is also the curling of the SSC Sonthofen used, as well as numerous amateur hockey teams. From October to March the hall is open to school and mass sports several times a week.

The hall currently (as of 2020) seats 2200 spectators, of which 800 are seats.

Due to the age of the stadium, the city of Sonthofen and the ERC Sonthofen have been investing in the maintenance of the hall for several years now, so in recent years the cabins, the stadium restaurant, the boards and the right-hand stand, seen from the main stand, have been opened which houses the ERC's fan clubs have been completely renovated.
