The 19th World Swimming Championships should take place from July 16 to August 1, 2021 in the Japanese city ​​of Fukuoka . Due to the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to July / August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the swimming world championships have been postponed to the period from 13 to 29 May 2022 at the beginning of May 2020.

The World Swimming Federation (FINA) awarded the title fights to the Hungarian capital Budapest on July 19, 2013 at its congress on the sidelines of the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona .

After the Mexican city ​​of Guadalajara returned the 2017 Swimming World Championships for financial reasons, FINA awarded these championships to the Hungarian capital Budapest on March 11, 2015 . Since the city was to host the World Cup in 2021, the title fights were re-advertised and another host was sought.

On January 31, 2016, FINA awarded the 2021 world title bouts to the Japanese city of Fukuoka, which was the venue in 2001 . For the subsequent World Cup in 2023, Doha in the emirate of Qatar was awarded the contract.
