Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection (German Bundestag)
The Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection of the German Bundestag (formerly Legal Committee ) is a parliamentary committee that deals with legislation , German law and consumer protection .
The members discuss the draft bills in all areas of legal policy, such as constitutional , civil and criminal law . In addition, this committee of the German Bundestag is responsible for deliberations on the involvement of the parliament in proceedings before the Federal Constitutional Court. He also deals with international legal policy, in particular due to the involvement of national parliaments in legislative projects of the European Commission as provided for in the Lisbon Treaty . It does not fall within the remit of the committee to deal with complaints from citizens about legal violations or to exercise legal supervision over other state powers.
The committee is responsible for legislation in German criminal and civil law as well as in questions of procedural law ( criminal and civil procedure code ) and the constitution of the courts . He also checks the legal formality of the laws. At the end of its work, the committee issues an opinion in which it recommends a version of the draft law to be voted on by parliament, which may be changed from the ministry's draft.
Through its work, the committee brings the interests of the parties represented in the Bundestag into the legislative work. In the context of public hearings, he also makes use of the expertise of relevant experts from universities, associations, business organizations and the judiciary.

The 43 full members of the committee in the 19th German Bundestag consist of 15 members of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group , 9 members of the SPD parliamentary group , 6 members of the AfD parliamentary group , 5 members of the FDP parliamentary group and 4 members each from the left-wing parliamentary group and the Bundestag faction Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen together.
After the committee chairman Stephan Brandner (AfD) was voted out on November 13, 2019, the committee will be headed by Heribert Hirte (CDU / CSU) until further notice.
