Detlef Seif (born August 15, 1962 in Euskirchen ) is a German politician ( CDU ). Since 2009 he has represented constituency 92 (Euskirchen - Rhein-Erft-Kreis II) as a directly elected member of the German Bundestag .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1982, Seif did basic military service in Munster and in the Army Office in Cologne in a department for management and operational fundamentals. In 1984 he began studying law in Bonn , which he completed in 1989 with the first state examination and a focus on “Special Administrative Law”. During his studies, he received a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . From 1990 to 1993 Seif was a trainee lawyer at the Cologne Higher Regional Courtand passed the second state law examination in the elective "Civil Law". In 1993 he founded a law firm specializing in family law, labor law, tenancy law, inheritance law and traffic law in Weilerswist .

Seif is Protestant , married and has one daughter.

Seif has been a member of the CDU since 1982 and since then has held a number of offices within the Junge Union and the CDU. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the council of the community of Weilerswist. From 2005 to 2009 he headed the committee for the “Weilerswist-Süd” development area. From 2001 to 2009 he was chairman of the CDU community association Weilerswist. Seif has headed the Euskirchen district association since 2009 and is deputy chairman of the Aachen CDU district association.

In the 1980s he was chairman of the citizens' initiative to preserve the Steinbach dam . In the mid-1980s he was a consultant for the International Society for Human Rights on the subject of "Human rights violations in the GDR".

Seif has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 . In the federal election in 2009 he won the constituency Euskirchen - Erftkreis II (today: Euskirchen - Rhein-Erft-Kreis II) with 43.6% of the first votes . He prevailed against the patient commissioner of the Federal Government at the time , Helga Kühn-Mengel ( SPD ), who received 29% of the vote. In the 2013 federal election he won constituency 92 with 50.9% of the first votes, in the 2017 federal election with 42.84%, ahead of his SPD competitor Ute Meiers (26.18%).

Seif has been chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Committee on European Union Affairs since 2014 . In terms of content, he is responsible for the area of ​​justice and home affairs (fundamental rights, Union citizenship, judicial and police cooperation, border protection and the fight against terrorism, asylum and migration policy). There are also relations with international organizations and association policy, as well as the Mediterranean / Euro-Mediterranean partnership (EUROMED). Seif is Country Rapporteur for the UK and Malta.

In the 18th electoral term he was a member of the Legal Committee of the German Bundestag . He was a deputy member of the Committee on Election Review, Immunity and Rules of Procedure .

In the 19th electoral term , he is a full member of the Committee on Affairs of the European Union (EU Committee) as well as the Interior Committee and is a member of the committee pursuant to Section 23c (8) of the Customs Investigation Service Act . In 2018, he also became a member of the “Breitscheidplatz” investigative committee that dealt with Anis Amris' attack on a Berlin Christmas market on December 19, 2016 .

In April 2018, Seif declared that he wanted to delete his Facebook profile. After the Cambridge Analytica data scandal became known , he responded with an open letter to the Managing Director Central Europe of Facebook. In it he stated: "As long as you show a sloppy handling of user data and do not implement seriousness and urgency, I cannot recommend anyone to use Facebook."

Seif is a member of the European Union Germany . In the Bundestag he is a member of the German-British and German-American parliamentary groups .

Böhmermann affair

Seif caused a stir when he recited the controversial Böhmermann humiliation poem in full before the Bundestag plenum on May 12, 2016 . According to his own admission, he wanted to clarify the questionable quality of the satire to the MPs: "Even dubious figures like Mr. Erdoğan enjoy the protection of their honor". The recording of the recitation is part of the “Deuscthland” exhibition designed by Jan Böhmermann at the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf.
