Helga Kühn-Mengel

Helga Kühn-Mengel b. Kühn (born July 1, 1947 in Duisburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). She was a member of the German Bundestag from 1996 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2017, and from 2004 to 2009 the Federal Government Commissioner for the interests of patients .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1967 at the Archbishop's Gymnasium in Brühl , Kühn-Mengel completed a degree in psychology at the University of Cologne , which she completed in 1972 with a degree in psychology. She then worked in Cologne, initially with the research association “The physically handicapped child” and then with the Center for Early Intervention and Treatment.

Kühn-Mengel is married and has three children.

Political party

She has been a member of the SPD since 1972 and since 2004 honorary chairman of the SPD local association in Brühl.

Kühn-Mengel has been a member of the Rhein-Erft district council since 1984 .

On December 23, 1996, she replaced Dietmar Thieser , who had left the German Bundestag .

From 1998 to 2002 she was the disability officer and from October 2002 to January 2004 she was the spokeswoman for the health and social security working group of the SPD parliamentary group . From November 2002 to November 2004 she was also a member of the SPD parliamentary group executive. Kühn-Mengel always entered the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the 2009 Bundestag elections, Kühn-Mengel lost to Detlef Seif ( CDU ) in the Euskirchen - Erftkreis II constituency and failed to return to the Bundestag via the state list.

Kühn-Mengel was re-elected as a candidate in 2012 at the constituency assembly of her Bundestag constituency. Her opponent Melanie Taprogge clearly lost.

In the 2013 federal election , she was able to re-enter the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Public offices

On January 1, 2004, she was given the newly created office of the Federal Government Commissioner for Patients. On November 19, 2009, Wolfgang Zöller ( CSU ) was appointed as her successor .

In the 18th legislative period of the German Bundestag, which began in 2013, she was a member of the Committee on Health .

Awards

Kühn-Mengel was awarded the Marie Juchacz plaque from the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), where she sits on the Federal Presidium on an honorary basis.

On June 14, 2012, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in Berlin.
