Jörg van Essen (born September 29, 1947 in Burscheid ) is a German politician ( FDP ).

Life

education and profession

After graduating from high school in Siegen in 1966 , van Essen did his military service in the tank artillery and then studied law in Cologne from 1968 , which he completed in 1973 with the first state examination and in 1976 with the second state examination . From 1976 to 1985 he worked as a public prosecutor in Münster , Hagen and Dortmund . From 1985 to 1990 he was a senior public prosecutor at the General Public Prosecutor's Office in Hamm .

From 1978 to 1984 he also held a teaching position for criminal law at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition to his studies and professional career, van Essen is an active reserve soldier. In 1993 he was promoted to colonel of the reserve ; this is the highest rank of the Bundeswehr that a reservist can achieve .

Party career

Van Essen has been a member of the FDP since 1980 . In 1982 he took over the chairmanship of the state committee for foreign, security and European policy of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1992 to 2010 he was chairman of the FDP district association Westphalia- South and a member of the state board of the FDP NRW. Van Essen has been a co-opted member of the Federal Presidium and Federal Executive Committee of the FDP since 1994. From 1994 to 1998 and again from 2009 to 2013 he was a member of the coalition committee of the leading representatives of the governing parties CDU , FDP and CSU .

Member of Parliament

From 1990 to 2013 van Essen was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1994 he was the first parliamentary manager of the FDP parliamentary group . He was a member of the Legal Committee as well as the Council of Elders and the Mediation Committee . Jörg van Essen has always entered the German Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . In August 2012, van Essen announced that he would not be standing for the 2013 federal election in order to “give younger colleagues the chance of a political career”.

On October 17, 2013, he was elected together with Otto Fricke and Stefan Ruppert as one of the three equal liquidators of the FDP parliamentary group.

His political priorities are internal and external security and, in legal policy, victim protection .

Private

Van Essen is single and a Roman Catholic .
