Irene Mihalic (born November 17, 1976 in Waldbröl ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) from Gelsenkirchen . The police officer has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013 and has been the domestic policy spokeswoman for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group since 2016 .

Life

Irene Mihalic grew up as the youngest of three siblings. Her parents are from Croatia, they came to Germany in the 1960s. She completed training as a police officer and studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia (degree: Diplom-Verwaltungswirt (FH) ). She studied criminology and police science at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (2016 graduation as MA ). In 2018 she did her doctorate at the law faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum. Her dissertation was published under the title Police operations, crime and space - a criminal geographic analysis based on police operation data and social structure data of the city of Gelsenkirchen .

From 1993 she worked as a police officer, from 2007 at the police headquarters in Cologne . At the end of the 2000s, she and her colleague at the time and later husband Dennis Melerski appeared in the German reality TV series Attention Control! - Commitment to the law enforcement officers . She has been the mother of a son since 2015. Irene Mihalic is non-denominational.

politics

Mihalic has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 2006. After the municipal elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2009 , she was a member of the Gelsenkirchen City Council until the end of 2013 . Since 2010 she has been a member of the state board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the federal election 2013 she ran in the constituency of Gelsenkirchen and in 7th place on the North Rhine-Westphalian state list of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. She succeeded in entering the Bundestag via the state list . In the 2017 federal election , Mihalic moved into the German Bundestag again in 5th place on the NRW state list of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. As a domestic policy spokeswoman and police officer, Mihalic deals with the topics of right-wing extremism (e.g. "Reichsbürger" ), Islamism , gun law , the establishment of the security authorities in Germany and Europe, civil protection and disaster control . and civil service law. Mihalic has been a member of the Bundestag Interior Committee since 2013 and spokesperson for domestic policy since April 2016. Initially, she acted as a spokesperson for internal security in the parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and until 2017 as chairwoman of the interior committee. In the 18th German Bundestag she was a member of the body pursuant to Section 23c (8) of the Customs Investigation Service Act . She is a member of the body under Article 13 Paragraph 6 of the Basic Law and a deputy member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection.

Mihalic also became the chairwoman of the 1st committee of inquiry of the 19th electoral term on the attack on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz , which was installed by the Bundestag on March 1, 2018. Before that, she was chairman of the second NSU investigative committee of the Bundestag (November 2015 to June 2017) and chairwoman of the investigative committee into the Edathy affair (July 2014 to December 2015).
