Gökay Akbulut (born November 16, 1982 in Pinarbasi , Turkey ) is a German politician and social scientist . She is a member of the 19th German Bundestag for the Left Party .

Life

Akbulut was born in Pinarbasi , Turkey in 1982 and has lived with her family in Germany since 1990. She is a Kurdish Alevite .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in Hamm in Hamburg in 2003 , Akbulut studied political science , sociology and public law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and graduated in 2008 with an MA. She completed internships at the United Nations in New York and in the offices of the Bundestag MPs Alexander Ulrich and Heike Hänsel . She later worked from 2010 to 2011 a. a. as a lecturer in the field of education with disadvantaged young people and new immigrants. From 2016 to 2017 she worked as a consultant for migration and education at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart.

Political commitment

Akbulut has been a member of Die Linke since 2006 . Since 2012 she has been part of the Left in Mannheim , four years of which was on the board of the Mannheim district association. From May 2014 to June 2018 she represented the left in the Mannheim municipal council, among other things in the education, integration and security committee. In 2016, she led the election campaign for the left in Baden-Württemberg as the top candidate.

She also acts as a secretary . Akbulut is also an alternate member of the Committee on Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , the Committee on Home Affairs and Homeland, and the Election Committee. She also represents the parliamentary group in the German-Turkish and German-Greek parliamentary groups and is a deputy member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . Akbulut has a good network in Europe thanks to its longstanding work in Kurdish associations and its support for the Kurdish movement.

In 2017, Akbulut's observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution became known because of her involvement in the Kurdish movement. She is accused of maintaining contacts with Kurdish associations that are close to the PKK terrorist organization . Akbulut claims to be taking legal action against the observation that began in 2007 and is receiving support from the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag and its party Die Linke Baden-Württemberg .

Political positions

In the discussion about the ratification of the Federal Government's UN Migration Pact, Akbulut led a dispute in his own parliamentary group that raises opposing positions within the left-wing parliamentary group. With a motion for the ratification of the pact and thus against the position of the parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht , she attracted attention.
