Helga Lopez b. Schmidt (born August 7, 1952 in Gießen ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was a member of the German Bundestag from 2005 to 2009 .

Life and work

After graduating from high school , Helga Lopez completed an apprenticeship in finance at the Rotenburg state finance school and then worked at the tax offices in Langen , Gießen and Wetzlar until 1991 . Helga Lopez is Protestant and married. She is mother and grandmother.

She has been a member of the SPD since 1972. Since 1985 Helga Lopez has been a member of the municipal council of her place of residence, Biebertal . She was also a member of the district council of the district of Giessen .

Lopez was in the 2005 federal election as SPD direct candidate of the constituency Lahn-Dill in the German Bundestag elected. It achieved 42.2% of the first votes . In the 2009 Bundestag election , she did not run again and left the German Bundestag.

The main focus of her work as a member of the Bundestag lay in the areas of family policy , social affairs and finances. Helga Lopez was a member of the Bundestag Committee on Family, Seniors, Women and Youth, in the working group “New Accents in Family Policy” in the working groups “Distributive Justice” and “Local Policy” of the SPD parliamentary group, as well as in the intergroup hospice. Since December 2006 she has been a member of the Working Group on Federalism Reform II (reform of the financial constitution). Since March 2008 she was also a full member of the Legal Committee, where she was responsible for family and financial issues.

Lopez publicly accused the "rebels" of indirectly bribing the "rebels" in connection with the prevented election of Andrea Ypsilanti as Prime Minister of Hesse. “I didn't expect the mighty energy industry to win,” she said. She later downgraded the charge to an emotional expression. There is no evidence of bribery.

Lopez was convicted of tax evasion in October 2008 in the criminal order procedure . However, it does not count as a criminal record in the sense of the law, since the penalty was no more than 90 daily rates. On September 11, 2008, the public prosecutor in Gießen issued a penalty order against Helga Lopez for 90 daily rates. After their immunity was lifted , it became final on October 7th. Between 2004 and 2007, Helga Lopez had not submitted a tax return for her income as mayor of Biebertal and as a member of parliament and paid 28,000 euros too little in taxes.

Public offices

From 1992 to 2000 Helga Lopez was the full-time first alderman and from 2000 to 2005 mayor of the municipality of Biebertal. In spring 2006 she was awarded the title of Honorary Mayor by the municipality .
