Kummergebirge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kummergebirge (Czech Hradčanské stěny , Polomené hory ) is a low mountain range in the north of the Czech Republic . The Kummergebirge is located between the rivers Ploučnice ( Polzen ) and Robečský potok as well as the Máchovo jezero ( Macha Lake , formerly also a large pond ) in northern Bohemia . Large parts of the mountains are under nature protection as the Břehyně-Pecopala National Nature Reserve , and since 2014 it has been entirely part of the Kokořínsko-Máchův kraj Landscape Protection Area (ChKO).

Emergence

Similar to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and numerous other sandstone areas in Bohemia, the Chalk Sea also deposited sand here, which solidified into sandstone over the course of millions of years . In the Tertiary the sandstone plateau was raised and individual conical elevations were formed. Iron incrustations are widespread here in the sandstone.

landscape

The Kummergebirge is a landscape of contrasts. At the foot of the mountains, dry pine forests spread out, while in the interior of the mountains there are moist, cool grounds (called ditches here) with natural beech forests. The Ploučnice ( Polzen ) river is unique in its landscape and flows past in wide meanders in the north. The Břehyňský potok , the Ploužnický potok , the Hradčanský potok and the Robečský potok flow through the Kummergebirge . The highest peaks are the Petzberg ( Pec ) and the Great Buchberg ( Velká Buková ).

Military use

After the native German population was expelled in 1945, the Ralsko military training area was created in the area between Ještěd ( Jeschken ) and Máchovo jezero from 1946 . More than 30 villages were razed to the ground. The Czechs now living there also had to leave their new home. A large military airfield was built south of Mimoň . After the occupation of the country by Soviet troops in 1968, they took over the area. After the withdrawal of the Soviet Army , the training area was closed on December 31, 1992.
