The Ploučnice ( German der Polzen , formerly also Pulsnitz ) is a right tributary of the Elbe in northern Bohemia , Czech Republic .

course

The Upper Polzenquelle (pramen Horní Ploučnice) is located in the Jeschken Mountains on the southwest slope of Ještěd (Jeschken) near Hoření Paseky (Oberpassek) . Then the Ploučnice flows past Zadní Ves and Dolení Paseky to the southwest, where it reaches the Ralská pahorkatina (Rollberg hill country) in Janův Důl . The Lower Polzenquelle (Hlavní pramen Ploučnice), which is richer in water, flows to the west of Janův Důl .

The further course leads over Jenišovský Mlýn and Osečná to Lázně Kundratice , where the Hamerská strouha is derived on the left. After that, the stream first takes a north-westerly, later a westerly direction. Via Chrastná, Břevniště and Útěchovice it reaches Hamr na Jezeře , where it reunites with the Hamerská strouha, which flows from the Hamerský rybník. Below the Vartenberk Castle , the Ploučnice flows past Stráž pod Ralskem . Its middle course leads at the northern foot of the Ralsko through Malé Ralsko and Noviny pod Ralskem , at the upper entrance of which the stream in the Průrva Ploučnice runs through a sandstone rock. The Ploučnice then takes a southerly direction and flows through Srní Potok and Mimoň . Between Ploužnice, Boreček and Hradčany , the course of the Ploučnice runs north of the Hradčany airfield to the west.

On the northern edge of the Kummergebirge the Ploučnice changes its direction to the northwest and flows in numerous meanders past Veselí, Brennský Mlýn, Brenná, Vlčí Důl, Heřmaničky, Vitkov, Dobranov, Žizníkov, Svárov and on the southern outskirts of Česká Lípa . At their other run through the northeastern part of the Czech Central Mountains are Dubice, Robeč, Stráž u České Lípy, Stružnice , Jezvé, Bělá, Stoupno, Horní Police , Žandov , Dolní Police, Malý Šachov, Stary Šachov , Brlohy, Valkeřice , Oldřichov and Františkov nad Ploučnicí . There the Ploučnice forms a bend in the river around a mountain spur on which the ruins of the Šarfenštejn castle are located. The underflow of the Ploučnice via Terezinske Údolí, Mlatce, Heřmanov , Benešov nad Ploučnicí , Eliščino Údolí, Jedlka, Mala Veleň , Soutěsky, Březiny, Bechlejovice, Libverda and Stare Mesto in the urban area of Děčín . There the river is bridged south of the Děčín východ station by the Kolín – Děčín and Děčín – Jedlová railway lines. After 102 kilometers the Ploučnice joins the Elbe south of the Děčín Castle .

description

The upper course of the Ploučnice, apart from the steep course at its beginnings at the descent of the Jeschkengebirge, leads from Janův Důl in the Ralská pahorkatina with little gradient through a wide Muldental, which is only limited by rugged elevations on the Ralsko and the Hradčanské stěny in the Kummer Mountains. On the middle reaches the Ploučnice between Česká Lípa and Starý Šachov forms an increasingly deeper sole valley. Below Starý Šachov, the Ploučnice flows through a valley until it reaches the wide valley of the Elbe at Bechlejovice just before its mouth.

The Děčín – Jedlová railway runs through the Ploučnice Valley between Děčín and Benešov nad Ploučnicí, followed by the Benešov nad Ploučnicí – Česká Lípa railway upstream .

The Polzen Gorge near Noviny pod Ralskem and the meander of the Ploučnice near Dobranov are protected as natural monuments .
