Šarfenštejn Castle

The castle Šarfenštejn , also Ostrý (German Scharfenstein ) is a castle ruin near Františkov nad Ploučnicí above the valley of the Ploučnice ( Polzen ) in the eastern Bohemian Central Mountains in the Czech Republic . From the medieval castle only some parts of the outer walls and remains today are the striking, towering above the valley the keep received. The location on a narrow ridge surrounded on three sides by the Ploučnice is remarkable.

history

The castle was built by the Markwartitzers around 1230 . It is indirectly mentioned in a document for the first time in 1268 ( Marquardus de Sarfnstain ). It is not clear whether the Markwartitz owners or just royal administrators of the castle. Under King Ottokar II Přemysl , the castle belonged to the royal estates. It was later pawned several times . In 1445, after a four-day siege , the castle was captured and burned down by the Upper Lusatians in a long-standing conflict between the Upper Lusatian Union of Six Cities and the Wartenbergers . In 1515 the castle was first listed as desolate.
