Jürgen Andreas Michael Martens (born August 3, 1959 in Munich ) is a German politician ( FDP ). He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2017 . From 2009 to 2014 he was Saxony's Minister of State for Justice and Europe and from 2004 to 2014 a member of the Saxon State Parliament .

Life and work

From the age of ten Martens grew up in the Black Forest , where he passed his Abitur. After completing his community service, he began studying law in Freiburg im Breisgau and graduated in 1986 with the first state examination. This was followed by his legal clerkship, during which he worked at the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg , in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg and in 1987/88 at the General Directorate for Agriculture / Anti-Fraud of the European Community in Brussels . After the second state examination in 1990 Martens was in Loerrach admission as a lawyer .

In July 1990 he moved to the Saxon town of Meerane , with which Lörrach has a town partnership. In September 1990 he was admitted to the bar and until 1997 worked as a freelance lawyer in a supra-local law firm specializing in business law and advising and representing public bodies. With the dissertation subsidy fraud to the detriment of the European Communities in 2000 he was at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg with Klaus Tiedemann Dr. jur. PhD.

He has been married since 1991 and has two sons.

In 1976 Martens joined the FDP and the German Young Democrats . From 1983 he was a member of the Young Liberals and active in their expanded federal executive board. Later he was a member of the state executive committee of the FDP Baden-Württemberg . From January 1990 he supported the young liberals in Dresden , especially in founding the young liberals campaign (JuliA). In 2001 Martens took over responsibility for program work in the FDP Saxony and headed the party's program committee before the state elections in 2004 and 2009 . Martens has been a member of the state board of the FDP Saxony since 2003. Since 2007 he has been deputy state chairman. Jürgen Martens holds the office of deputy district chairman in the Zwickau district association of Free Democrats.

In the 2004 state elections, he was elected to the Saxon state parliament via the FDP state list. During the fourth legislative period he was the domestic and legal policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group and its member in the Committee on Internal Affairs, the Committee on Constitution, Legal and European Affairs and the Committee of Inquiry into Organized Crime. He was also deputy spokesman for the state parliament's evaluation committee.

After the takeover of government by a CDU-FDP coalition as a result of the Saxon state elections in 2009, Martens was appointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich as Minister of State for Justice and Europe on September 30, 2009 . Since 2010 he has been a member of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union. When the FDP left the state parliament in the state elections in Saxony in 2014 , he lost his mandate there.

After the formation of the government and the re-election of Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich on November 12, 2014, Martens left the cabinet.

Member of the Bundestag

In 2017 Martens ran as a direct candidate in constituency 165 as well as on list position 2 of the FDP Saxony and thus moved into the 19th German Bundestag . There he is a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection . Martens is the legal policy spokesman for the Free Democrats in the Bundestag.

Since 2019 Martens has been Deputy Chairman of the Franco-German Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag and a member of the Franco-German Assembly .

Others

Jürgen Martens is chairman of the German group of Liberal International and the European Liberal Forum based in Brussels. He is also a member of the non-partisan European Union Germany , which advocates a federal Europe and the European unification process. In addition, since the founding of the Association of Liberal Lawyers in 2005, he has been its chairman in the Free State of Saxony.
