The Desolation Sound is a sound on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia in Canada . It is popular for boat tours because of its scenic beauty.

The steepest waterfall in North America is nearby . In addition, many glaciers drain directly into the sea through further waterfalls.

The Desolation is also home to the province's largest marine reserve, Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park .

The coast is characterized by igneous rock . The existing fjords were created by the strong glaciation in this region .

history

Before the first Europeans set foot in the area, the area was populated by the Salish . In the summer of 1792 two expeditions under the direction of George Vancouver as well as those of Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano Valdés y Flores came to the bay. They cooperated in mapping the bay. Many Europeans later made their way to the bay, particularly those from the Hudson's Bay Company . After the number of Indians fell sharply due to smallpox and tuberculosis at the end of the century before last, the number of European settlers rose sharply as the bay was ideal for fishing and logging. For this purpose, a large mill was built in Powell River .
