Marco Buschmann
Marco Buschmann (born August 1, 1977 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German politician ( FDP ) and has been Federal Minister of Justice in the Scholz cabinet since December 8, 2021 .
From October 2017 to December 2021 he was the first parliamentary secretary of the FDP parliamentary group . He was previously a member of the German Bundestag from 2009 to 2013 . From June 2012 to April 2014 he was General Secretary of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia and from June 2014 to September 2017 Federal Secretary of the FDP.

From 1984 to 1988 Buschmann attended the elementary school on Neustrasse in Gelsenkirchen-Erle. After graduating from the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen-Buer in 1997, he completed his one-year community service at the Bruder-Jordan-Haus nursing home in Gelsenkirchen-Buer. After that, Buschmann studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . In 2004 he completed his first state examination at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court . This was followed by a legal traineeship at the Essen District Court and in 2007 the second state examination at the Hamm Higher Regional Court . He worked as a lawyer for White & Case LLP Düsseldorf. His employment with the law firm has been suspended since November 2009. On January 1, 2014, he ended it. Since then he has been a self-employed lawyer.
In 2016 he received his doctorate to Dr. legal at the University of Cologne with the dissertation " ECJ and property guarantee. An analysis of the origin and content of European Union property law. The work was graded summa cum laude .
Political career
Buschmann has been a member of the FDP and the Young Liberals (JuLis) since 1994. From 1995 to 1998 he was spokesman for the Young Liberals in Gelsenkirchen, and between 1996 and 1997 he was Deputy District Chairman for the program of the Young Liberals in the Ruhr. From 1997 to 2003 he was deputy state chairman for programmatic at JuLis North Rhine-Westphalia and district chairman of JuLis Gelsenkirchen, and from 1998 to 2003 he was also a member of the extended national board.
He has been a member of the district board of the FDP Ruhr since 1998, initially as an assessor and since 2006 as press spokesman. From 2004 to 2010 he was deputy district chairman of the FDP Gelsenkirchen, and since 2010 he has been district chairman of the FDP Gelsenkirchen.
In the 2005 federal election , he ran as a direct candidate in the constituency of Gelsenkirchen . However, 2.5% of the first votes and 15th place on the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia were not enough for entry into the Bundestag. In the 2009 federal election , he ran again in the constituency of Gelsenkirchen . He achieved 7.0% and entered the Bundestag in 20th place on the list. He was chairman of the legal working group in the FDP parliamentary group and an expert in constitutional and commercial law. After his party failed to get past the five percent hurdle in the 2013 general election , he was no longer a member of the 18th Bundestag.
The federal board of the FDP appointed Buschmann federal manager with effect from June 1, 2014. In particular, he was entrusted with the task of restructuring the FDP financially and organizationally. He is one of the closest confidants of the Federal Chairman Christian Lindner and played an important role in the political realignment of the Liberals. In a series of articles and interviews, he explained the methods used to reposition the Free Democrats in advertising. The FDP election campaign with digital concepts aroused the interest of international election campaign managers. After his election to the German Bundestag, his position as Federal Secretary ended on October 31, 2017. Marco Mendorf was appointed as his successor .
In the 2017 federal elections , Buschmann stood for the FDP in the Gelsenkirchen constituency and was elected to the 19th German Bundestag via fourth place on the state list of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia . There he was the first parliamentary secretary of his group from 2017 to 2021 . Johannes Vogel was elected as his successor .
In the Bundestag, Buschmann was chairman of the committee for election verification, immunity and rules of procedure in the 19th electoral term . As a full member, he was also a member of the Council of Elders , the Committee for Election Verification , the Committee for Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection , the Joint Committee and the Mediation Committee .
For the federal elections on September 26, 2021, Buschmann successfully ran for place 4 on the list of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia. As a member of the steering group of the program commission, he was significantly involved in the development of the election program for the federal election.
At the suggestion of Chancellor Olaf Scholz , Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed him Federal Minister of Justice in the Scholz cabinet on December 8, 2021 .
Content focus
In his work as a member of the Bundestag, Buschmann placed particular emphasis on the protection of civil rights . For example, he campaigned against network blocking , data retention and advocated a strict review of existing security laws. Buschmann is committed to comprehensive liberalism , which also makes statements on socio-political issues. In this context he formulated, for example, theses on integration and the relationship between state and church . In addition, Buschmann was an expert in commercial law for the FDP parliamentary group. As a reporter , he dealt with business law issues such as the Transformation Act , the green papers on corporate governance and European company law issues such as the European private company .
During the corona pandemic, he called for greater parliamentary involvement and warned of a constitutional crisis in autumn 2020. He is committed to creating a concrete legal basis for combating corona in the Infection Protection Act and to quickly converting the so-called epidemic situation of national scope into regular parliamentary law. Together with other members of the FDP parliamentary group, he raised a constitutional complaint against the nightly curfews in the corona pandemic, which was rejected.
Buschmann was co-coordinator of the successful constitutional lawsuit brought by the CDU/CSU and FDP parliamentary groups against the Berlin rent cap . Furthermore, with his parliamentary group and the parliamentary groups of DIE LINKE and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, he initiated a norm control to review the electoral law reform of the grand coalition from October 2020. He accused the coalition of inactivity. Buschmann warns that an ever-growing parliament will be less able to work and will lose acceptance.
